December January Citrus County H Newsletter Citrus County Extension

February - March 2009 Citrus County 4-H Newsletter Citrus County Extension Service ● 3650 W Sovereign Path #1● Lecanto, FL 34461● (352)527-5700● FAX (352)527-5748 EMAIL ADDRESS: amy.duncan@bocc.citrus.fl.us Good Sportsmanship + Ethical Decisions = 4-H Success Sportsmanship begins with the Golden Rule:“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Play by the rules. Don’t look for ways to get around the rules. Rules are for everyone including YOU. Open your mind to others – listen and learn from 4-H advisors and other members. Respect your competitors in and outside of the show ring. Be a gracious winner and a dignified loser! Think before you act! Consider the consequences of your actions. You, your family and 4-H’s reputation are at stake. Model the 4-H motto, “To Make the Best Better,” teach others how to care for and show their project animal. Always show your gratitude. Thank sponsors, buyers, advisors, show officials, judges, parents and others who helped you. Never express anger towards your project animal, the judge or other exhibitors. Do not yell, hit or blame. Help portray a positive image for 4-H and the animal industry. Keep your animal and stall area clean and presentable at all times. An equal opportunity institution. Dear 4-H Members, Leaders, and Parents, County Events was great this year! I’m so excited about the new, “all Blue Ribbon’s go on rule.” We had a couple of tie’s that we didn’t have to break. And I know that Citrus County will be really well represented at District Event in May. Next up is the FAIR! Can you believe that it is already here? My advise is to be working on your record books now; don’t wait until the day before to finish up your book! And remember to have FUN! Learning by Doing, Integrity means using approved fitting and grooming practices and demonstrating positive behavior. Performance in the show ring is about being a CHAMPION member, not necessarily having the champion animal. Always stay INFORMED! Rules, policies and guidelines change – read them carefully and take appropriate ACTION! Never blame others for your mistakes. Take responsibility to meet project requirements and entry deadlines. Trust by consumers’ begins with your ability to produce a high quality, safe and wholesome project. Adhere to Livestock Tampering Rules: Don’t tamper. Honesty is always the best policy. Tell the truth. Do not falsely represent your animal or their records. Success with your 4-H project begins & ends with being a GOOD SPORT & making ETHICAL DECISIONS. Page 2 4-H Events and Activities 4-H Centennial Kickoff Event at the State Fair Florida 4-H celebrating their 100 years at the State Fair was a great success! Three clubs, American Eagle, Trailblazers and Floral City Team Green had the pleasure of hosting the six hole putt-putt golf course on February 16. It was the last day of the State Fair, but people came and enjoyed the decorated 4-H adventure. With each hole representing a different program area offered by 4-H, it was certainly a great attention getter. Children couldn't pass by without stopping in to give it a try! The area was decorated well with the 4-H District banners and a large time line display of the 100 years of 4-H. There were 4H History books and other items for sale at this event. Thank you to the Dovi, Wade, Dixon, Kunesky, Indelicato, Foster, Holloway, and Uzar families for volunteering. It was surely a day to remember. Page 5 Citrus County 4-H Club Reports Freedom Riders At our last meeting Ivanna Jones gave her presentation about mounted police. It was very good. We were told about the Bakas Equestrian Center. It is a place that uses horses for the handicapped in Tampa. We decided that we were going to the Bakas Equestrian Center for a field trip and to do some volunteer work on March 14th. For fund raising, we decided to do a yard sale. So if anyone has any items they no longer need and are still in good shape they can donate them to the Freedom Riders to be sold. We took turns riding the horse through an obstacle course. We measured ourselves to see how many hands we were. We then measured the horse. We watched the horse to see if he would be able to grab an apple out of the water. We played a team building game of passing a ball to each other in a circle without dropping it. To make it harder we tried to keep two balls being passed in our circle at the same time. We did good when we would quit laughing and concentrated. David Lloyd-Jones & Amber Hopkins are going to do their presentations next time. Anna Lampinen will be showing a horse at the showmanship class at the fair. Amber Hopkins and one of our new members Olivia Christman are going to start putting together a scrapbook for our club. By: David Lloyd-Jones Ropin’ the Wind Our club , Ropin’ the Wind, is doing good. At the 4th meeting, we went over some new and old business. Our 4-H members talked about how we did in County Events on February 7th at Lecanto Middle School. We talked about how we could improve our speeches. We are going to clip and trim the hooves at the next meeting that will be on Sunday, March 8th at the Cunningham’s ranch. We were so happy that we could have it there. Everyone will bring a dish of food. We were talking about what we were going to do for our clubs community service. We are going to donate our help to The Path Foundation . Sincerely, Kristen DeWitt Calling all Reporters: If you would like to submit a club report for the newsletter: email, mail, fax, or drop your story by the 4-H office. The next newsletter deadline is March 27th! Ease’s Rough Riders What a year! We started by having a man (Dr. Strickland) from the Florida Extension office come and talk about the good, bad and the edible things about bugs. We had our Christmas party, we had a Santa Claus, and all the Cloverbuds loved it. We also made Rudolph, the Red Nose Reindeer, crafts out of candy canes. We also donated a check to “shop with a cop,” which is a charity foundation. We sold our yearly Poinsettias and many members got their 4-H Camp partially paid for. By: Mitchell Foster Floral City Team Green Floral City Team Green has been busy!!! Like usual, we had our club meetings on the first and fourth monday of each month, at Floral City Park. However, unlike usual, at our meeting on February 2nd, it poured prior to our meeting...But that didnt stop Team Green!!! Instead of canceling our meeting, we had a short meeting, and then we went out to the baseball field and played kickball in the puddles. We had a great time!!! (although some of us got all muddy...)
