Senior of the Month Thais Magrane The Culver City Senior Center Board of Directors is pleased to honor Thais Magrane as our “Senior of the Month” for June, 2007. Thais has always been an active volunteer in the community and now in the Senior Center; a person who truly enjoys her volunteer activities. Thais was born in Guantanamo, Cuba. Castro closed the University during the revolution, which ended Thais’ college education. She then went to work for the Royal Bank of Canada, Guantanamo Branch. When the communist government took over Cuba, she fled to Madrid, Spain. After 2 years in Spain, Thais arrived in the United States in June of 1973. She met her husband soon thereafter and they married in 1974. Thais glows when she speaks of her two sons and how involved she was in the schools, Little League and Boy Scouts when they were growing up. While raising her sons, she got involved with the PTA and the School Bilingual Committee. Thais was the president of the Culver City Unified School District Bilingual Committee for three years and helped with all the school events. Many hours over many years were served in the Little League Snack Bar. The Senior Center became the focus of her volunteer time in 1996 when she helped with the Angel Caps for children with cancer. Since 2003, Thais has volunteered in the Nutrition Site at the reception desk, greeting all who approach the desk with her beautiful smile. Thais can be found at all the major events at the Senior Center. At the parties, she helps with decoration, registration, serving on the floor or in the kitchen - wherever she is needed. She also helps with the Women’s Health Fair, the Christmas Day Luncheon and the Carnival for Children with Disabilities. The Nutrition Site honored Thais as the “Volunteer of the Month” in recognition of all her hard work. The Friends of the Library and the Culver City Historical Society also benefit from Thais’ involvement. Traveling is her other favorite activity and she loves going on Senior Center Trips. Congratulations to Thais on being such a wonderful volunteer and a person who recognizes how important it is to offer a smile to others. June 2007 I was a "thousand points of light" long before volunteerism lighted up the sky and had an official name. I had my lights short-circuited, burned at both ends and occasionally punched out. I hang in there because generally volunteerism is a dazzling galaxy of gems that streak across the sky and illuminate the world when it falters and cannot find its way. I was thinking the other day that Americans are intrigued by royalty. Americans have never felt the need for a hierarchy who live in castles and get paid for waving and going to funerals, but I would like to propose a royal family for this country who would have no political power but would symbolize what we are all about and set the tone for our nation. . .the Royal Family of Volunteers. You cannot be born to this royal family. You must earn your way through the ranks. Congress will not appropriate a salary for your efforts. You won't even have your own principality, especially if you volunteer you medical services to travel down the Amazon River on your vacation to tend to the needs of children in Brazil. The perks of royalty, which usually add up to yachts, box seats, parades and state dinners, may translate to long hours, tired sandwiches, costs, rejection, cold coffee, and screaming kids. Royalty as a rule is recognizable. The Royal Family of Volunteers are nameless, faceless and forgettable. They are often taken for granted, and only a fraction of them are recognized for their talents. So how do you know you're royalty?? Ah. . .it's the crown jewels that give you away-that sparkling tiara of smiles you have given and tears you have shared, and the rich legacy of caring.
