Progress, Passing and Failing
• For most of you, there will be 6 modules this year. You must
pass every module (pass mark is 40%) in order to progress
to the second year.
• Modules are assessed through exam, coursework or a
mixture of the two (see Student Handbook for details). You
need to pass the module overall, not necessarily every item.
Module Module Title Credits Exam CW
Code % %
CP0110 Core Introduction to Spatial Planning 20 100 0
CP0130 Core Economic Issues in Spatial Planning* 20 50 50
• Failed modules can be taken again during the summer, and
if passed, you can progress to the second year (but will only
be awarded 40% in these subjects).

Coursework Procedures and
Assessment
• The Module Outline (accessed through CPLAN web site) sets out what coursework
needs to be done for each module, and why.
• For each item of coursework, there should also be a ‘coursework brief’ which is
issued by the module leader or one of the lecturers for that module. This specifies
word length, the intended style (essay, report, etc.) and extra material such as hints
and references.
• Every item of coursework has a submission date. Take your coursework to CPLAN
reception by 3.30 on that date. Fill in a form (available at reception) with your college
number, title of the work, etc. If you are late you get a mark of 0, unless you have
already obtained an extension (see the year tutor).
• Coursework is usually marked by the person who taught the material. Your work
should be returned, with comments and a mark, within 4 weeks of submission – if we
take longer, complain!
• Marking range is (in theory) 0-100%, but more realistically, about 30-80%, especially
for essays. We use Marking Guidelines to decide marks (see Student Handbook).
• If you are dissatisfied with your mark, arrange to see the marker (but note you cannot
formally appeal against a mark).
• Keep your returned coursework (a) for revision purposes, (b) because (in second and
fourth years) we may need it for the external examiner.
