RESIDENT OFF CAMPUS
If you would like to live off campus during your time at Keele University, Student Accommodation Lettings
Service will be pleased to help. Our website, www.keelestudentpad.co.uk, offers a comprehensive list
including some photographs of properties let by local landlords. Whilst we endeavor to list properties of a
reasonable standard, Student Accommodation Lettings Service cannot inspect or approve any private
sector rented properties. Therefore, any agreement made is ultimately between the individual and the
landlord, and is your responsibility. The Independent Advice Unit of the Students’ Union will be happy to
offer advice before you sign any contract (www.kusu.net/housing)
The nearest town to Keele University in which the majority of properties are found is Newcastle Under Lyme.
The town centre is about 2 miles away and is easily accessible by bus, which leaves Keele campus every 10
minutes during the day time.
If you wish to visit Keele and stay on the campus to view properties before your course commences the cost
of this varies between £15.00 and £40.00 per night dependant on the room type available. We recommend
that you book this at least one month in advance to ensure availability. To book this accommodation please
contact Student Accommodation Lettings Service (see contacts section below).
The different types of off-campus accommodation are as follows:
Accommodation in a shared house on a self-catering basis. This costs from £50 to £55 per person per week
plus gas, electricity and water bills and usually refers to a private house shared with 3 or 4 other students.
The landlord will offer a legal contract for a minimum of six months, which will be binding. As well as paying
rent, you will also be asked to pay a deposit which the landlord must protect under a tenancy deposit
protection scheme which will not be refunded if you break the contract, damage the property or leave it in an
untidy state when you leave.
Self-catering accommodation in a single room with a resident landlord/lady. This costs from £60 to £70 per
week inclusive of bills. It could be a single room in a house where the family includes children, or the house
of a single man or woman who offers a room in his/her home. The rent usually includes the cost of gas and
electricity but you will have to pay for food and telephone bills. You do not have to sign a contract, although
some landlords/ladies ask for a commitment for a period of time. You should expect to pay a deposit.
Accommodation in a family house with breakfast and evening meal provided. This costs approximately £80
per week inclusive of bills. Single and double rooms are occasionally offered in a family house where the
meals are provided by the owner of the house. This category of accommodation is not offered very often.
An inclusive rent would usually be charged with no other payments required except for telephone calls.
