                                  Week 17
                             January 5-9, 2009

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! Hopefully, your holiday was restful and you are also ready
to get back into some sort of daily routine. We are!

We are beginning to prepare for midyear assessments in language arts. It
will take several weeks to individually administer the TPRI, as well as, the
DRA. After completion, our team will again meet to assess growth and
accommodate changes as needed.

The pace of the second grade curriculum is increasing, along with the
difficulty. It is imperative that your child keep up. If your child does not
know the basic addition and subtraction facts, they will be unsuccessful with
regrouping, or trading, in math. This week we will continue to focus on 2
digit addition with no regrouping. However, next week we will begin
regrouping. For example: 45
                              +27

Spelling: Week 17 words contain the pattern ‘th’ and ‘wh’. You see this
pattern in while and teeth.

Jan Brett will be our celebrated author of the month. The Mitten, The Hat,
and Armadillo Rodeo will be incorporated into our skills and strategies.

The Night Sky will be our science unit. Beware of those full moons!

Please note that January 15 and 16 are early release days. Students are
dismissed at 11:00. Please make arrangements for prompt pickup.

Student Holiday: Monday, January 19. Homework logs will go home on
Tuesday, along with the spelling words.

Thank you for sharing in your child’s education.
