INSTRUCTIONS FOR SEMIFINALISTS

Schedule:

All semi-finalists should plan to be in the lobby of Buck Hall on the
University of the Pacific campus at 8:00 AM on Saturday, January 17th.
Directions to Stockton, the university, and Buck Hall follow later in
this document.

The competition itself will begin at 9:00 AM, continue until 12:00 noon,
break for lunch, resume at 1:00 PM and finish at about 3:00 or so.
There will be a refreshment break followed by a presentation by our
assistant dean on the University, the Conservatory of Music, and musical
careers. This is an important opportunity to become familiar with many
of the issues involved in college admissions, whether or not you intend
a music major or to apply to our university. There will be an
opportunity to ask questions and hear about scholarships, auditions,
etc.

After this presentation, at roughly 4:00 PM, there will be two master classes
run by Dr. Rex Cooper and Frank Wiens of the Conservatory piano faculty.
At the end of these two classes, the announcement of the prizewinners will be made and prizes
will be awarded. The Piano Competition will close after this presentation, probably around 5:30
PM..

Audition Instructions:

Each semi-finalist is allowed fifteen minutes to perform all or portions
of all three pieces. Each semi-finalist can choose the work to start
with. The judges will probably want to hear a portion of each of the
three selections, and may need to interrupt the selections in order to
hear some of the other repertoire. All repertoire must be memorized.

Auditors:

The auditions are open to the public and usually there is an audience of
people from the community as well as family members of the contestants.
There is an auditing fee of $5.00 for all those, including family
members, who wish to listen to the auditions. This entitles the auditor
to entrance to all of the day's events, auditions, presentations, and
master classes. Children under six are admitted free of charge.

Lunch will be available on campus from 12:00-1:00 P.M. for contestants
and their families at a nominal charge.

Practice:

Rooms with grand pianos will be made available for semi-finalists to
practice. Because there are 17 semi-finalists, arrangements will be
made for reserved practice time for each but time will have to be
somewhat limited.

UOP Auditions:

Seniors performing in this round of the competition, as stated in the
original brochure, will have their competition auditions count also as
auditions for admission to the Conservatory. Seniors who are seriously
interested in applying to the UOP Conservatory should plan on finishing
their application process by early February for maximum consideration
for financial aid and merit scholarships. Applications can be completed
online.

Accomodations:

If any students and/or their families need overnight accomodations on
Friday or Saturday night, here is a list of available motels with their
telephone numbers:

All are within a half-mile of each other on March Lane, about a mile
from the campus.

Directions to Stockton and the University of the Pacific:

From the South:

Take I-5 north to Stockton to the March Lane exit. Get on March Lane
going east (right)-be careful on the exit ramp lanes. Some will divert
you off of March Lane into a turn lane-follow signs for March Lane east
and get in the appropriate lane(s). Follow March for several blocks
until you get to Pacific Avenue. You will see a Target Store on your
left at this intersection. Turn right on Pacific Avenue at the light,
and continue straight until you cross a slight bridge and you will see
the campus on your right. Turn right into the campus at the traffic
light and take an immediate left into the parking lot. Parking in this
lot is free on the weekends. Then follow directions to Buck Hall below.

From the North:

Take I-5 South to March Lane, exit at March and turn left (east) onto
March Lane. Follow exit lane instructions to make sure that you are not
forced into a left turn lane that is divided: follow signs for March
Lane east. Follow March for several blocks until you get to Pacific
Avenue. You will see a Target Store on your left at this intersection.
Turn right on Pacific Avenue at the light, and continue straight until
you cross a slight bridge and you will see the campus on your right.
Turn right into the campus at the traffic light and take an immediate
left into the parking lot. Parking in this lot is free on the weekends.
Then follow directions to Buck Hall below.

From 580:

Take this east and follow signs to Stockton. This will take you onto
205 and eventually onto I-5 North. Then follow directions above "from
the south".

From Highway 99:

Once you get to Stockton, follow signs for Highway 4 West, and then get
on I-5 North, following signs for Sacramento. Take the March Lane exit
following directions above "from the South".

From Highway 4 (Antioch,Brentwood area):

Take Highway 4 to I-5 North in Stockton, get on I-5 and follow
directions above "from the South".

If you are heading for one of the listed motels, all of these directions
take you to March Lane, and all of the motels listed are with a few
blocks of the intersection of March Lane and I-5, some slightly west and
some slightly east.

DIRECTIONS TO BUCK HALL ON THE CAMPUS:

Once you have parked in the parking lot as directed above, walk to the building with the black
plexiglas awning (Faye Spanos Concert Hall/Conservatory of Music) which faces on that
parking lot. Facing the front of the building, please turn right and follow the right side of that
building around to near the back. On your right adjoining the Faye Spanos Concert Hall is Buck
Hall, where registration takes place. All of the auditions and other events are held in the Recital
Hall, across the courtyard slightly on your left.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION WHICH I NEED FROM YOU: (please e-mail to me by
Jan. 13)

1. A final repertoire list of the three works you intend to play in the
competition, ideally including timings of each work.

2. The repertoire selection that you will use in the master classes if
you are selected to play in them. Please remember to have a copy of
this selection with you for the master classes.

3. The number of guests coming with you who will be auditing the
competition and possibly joining you for lunch on campus-the latter so
that we can let the food service know how many people to expect.
Remember, there is a $5.00 auditing fee and a nominal charge around the
same amount for lunch.

4. Know your social security number or have your number with you. The
law requires that a small tax form be filled out be those receiving
prize money. DO NOT e-mail or send me this information.

5. If there are any problems with your being able to stay for the whole
day's events, please let me know as soon as possible.
