SCHOOL WILL NOW BE IN SESSION ON JUNE 2, 2009
Please Beware!
When you are dropping your child off or picking up please be aware that there are people crossing the drive. This is
especially true in the morning. We had a near miss recently when one of our staff members was almost hit.
Also, please do not let your child get out or in on the driver’s side of the car. There are times when someone is
coming in the left lane and may not see a child getting out of or into the car. This can be awkward when kids have to climb over
car seats with siblings, but safety trumps awkward every time.
Finally, if your child has to come back into the building, please get out of the car and watch him or her cross the drive.
Despite the hours we spend teaching kids how to cross the street, they run across the drive with nary a look in either direction.
The older the kid the less he or she looks.
A huge thank you to everyone for your signs! It is so helpful to me and so necessary when someone is subbing for
me!!!
Keep up the good work. Mrs. Swihart
Principal’s Message
Well, Mother Nature has been frowning on us, and as a result we will be extending
the school year. Currently, as I type this, June 2 will be our last day.
We have a number of events on tap for this month. March 13th is our Falcon Frenzy
night. It is also the open house for our Student Showcase. March 19th is the day
for our Spring Pictures. And finally, March 23 is our Gallery Night which kicks
off our Fine Arts Week. This year’s Gallery Night will have a “Jeans” theme
following the trend of the Fort Wayne Ballet and Philharmonic to have Jeans
nights; it should be a great night.
Kindergarten Round‐up will be March 17 @ 6:30pm. If you or anyone you know is
sending a Kindergarten student our way, please contact Mrs. Lowden in the office
to be put on our mailing list. We are still offering Full Day Kindergarten at
Arcola. Cedar Canyon parents that are interested in Full‐Day Kindergarten should
attend our Round‐up and sign‐up for it then. There will be a meeting in the
future at Arcola for anyone that is going to be in the program.
This year’s calendar provides additional days before both Thanksgiving vacation
and Spring Break. These days were added to help with family travel arrangements
and to improve the district’s attendance by eliminating the two days with the
worst attendance. Please use these days in the spirit in which they were added.
If the days before them become abused, the School Board has indicated that they
will return to the old schedule.
Just a reminder that NACS policy grants 5 excused vacation days per year. Please
complete a vacation request form prior to your vacation. Any homework missed will
be given to the child upon return to school.
Please remember that if you have a change of plans regarding your child’s
transportation home we need to know before 2:00. After 2:00 it becomes too hectic
to guarantee that everyone who needs to know about the change does. Also, please
review your Just‐in‐Case instructions with your children and make changes as
necessary with their teachers.
REMINDER TO PARENTS: NOTES TO SCHOOL (OTHER THAN VACATION NOTES) SHOULD NOT BE SENT
IN ADVANCE. THE NOTES SHOULD PERTAIN TO THE DAY SENT.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.
The PPSG (PEAK Parent Support Group) will once again be sponsoring a Guest Speaker. Please feel free to join us, even if you don't have a
current PEAK student.
"Parenting the Gifted Child" by Dr. Nancy Bangel
Thursday, March 19th, 7:00 PM in the Cedar Canyon Cafeteria
Dr. Nancy Bangel is an assistant professor in the School of Education at IPFW. She is finishing her second year at IPFW having come from
Purdue University. At Purdue, she was a coordinator in the Gifted Education Resource Institute and coordinated the Super Saturday, Super Summer,
and Summer Residential Programs. Currently she teaches Educational Psychology courses for the elementary education undergraduates and summer
graduate students at IPFW.
The presentation she plans to give is fairly generic. She will discuss some of the differences you have as parents of gifted children. She will
discuss some avenues you have for meeting the unique needs of your children and the importance of having groups like the PEAK parent group for
support and information.

Counselor’s Corner
If your child has access to the internet, hold up your hand. That includes many parents today. The
internet is a marvelous tool that can access everything from information on pandas in China to the latest songs to
breaking news. Most of us use it everyday.
As wonderful as the internet is, it can also be full of pitfalls for kids. The anonymity that it affords makes
it possible for kids to pretend to be someone or something they are not; it provides an opportunity for encounters
that include rumors, bullying, and taunts; materials with graphic or violent images or words that can make their way
into your home. Dr. David Walsh of the National Institute on Media and the Family, (www. Mediawise.org) provides
tips for parents that will help them to ensure the internet experiences their children have are positive.
-Set ground rules for content: kid friendly sites only/block sites that are for older kids/adults (if you don’t how,
enlist the help of another parent who is computer savvy)
- Set a weekly time limit
- Get to know the sites your kids frequent. Visit and set up a profile if necessary
-Talk to your kids about what they are doing and seeing on the internet
-Ask about the people they may meet on the internet
-Be sure that the computer is in a family area not in the child’s room. Kids need to know that mom or dad may walk
by and look over their shoulder anytime.
-Be sure that online profiles don’t reveal personally identifying information
-Let your kids know that any type of online harassment, bullying, rumor spreading will not be tolerated and will
result in loss of computer privileges
You would not let your child wander around town unsupervised; don’t let him/her wander the internet either.
