Volume 12, Issue 2 Spring Newsletter, 2005 ELPS – Spring 2005 The Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Division (ELPS) has a desire to stay connected with all program graduates. Faculty continue to be interested in the professional success of their students. Each year UNC Career Services conducts a survey of the previous year’s graduates. The information assists the Division with planning and evaluation activities. The Leadership E-News most recent surveys of ELPS graduates (Summer 2002, Fall 2003 and Spring 2003) provide a positive report regarding employment goal success. Out of the 41 respondents (N=57), 80.4% reported that they were employed in their preferred field. This report, along with the positive anecdotal feedback our faculty hear from graduates on a regular basis, is heartening for all concerned. The ELPS faculty is committed to the professional success of all graduates. - Educational Leadership (EL) - Higher Education and Student Affairs Leadership (HESAL) DIVISION OF EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND POLICY STUDIES www.unco.edu/coe/elps Charting UNC’s Future And the future begins this July! The ELPS Newsletter has published this policy since Fall ‘02 and will continue publishing the link to the Graduate School, so you can access information on the Continuous Registration Policy. If you are unaware of how this policy impacts your academic career, or if you would like clarification, please click on this link: http://www.unco.edu/grad/general/home.htm. New Requirements for MA and PhD This information is so important we want to mention this again. There are two curriculum changes effective in Summer 2004. The MA in Educational Leadership changes from 36 to 30 hours, and the PhD in Higher Education and Student Affairs Leadership changes from 75 to 64 semester hours. Students who are currently enrolled should work with their advisors to modify their Plans of Study at any time prior to the comprehensive examinations. Note that the changes were effective since the 2004 Summer Sessions. Travelog from Taipei, part II Kung Hsi Fa Tsai! Happy Chinese New Year! In February we celebrated the Chinese New Year, which included fireworks throughout the day and night and visits to temples where thousands congregate to pray as they burn incense. For fun, during the winter break we had time to travel to Australia to continue data collection on school-level governance and financial management. We spent a week in Melbourne, staying with Gary O'Mahony who taught with Bruce Barnett in our Grand Junction cohort three summers ago. He was a principal and worked with the Australian Principals' Centre. He and Bruce continue to consult on leadership and mentoring, and Kathy and Rosemary also worked with the APC. We enjoyed the kangaroos, koalas, and penguins along with dramatic coastal scenery. Then we flew to New Zealand for a week of relaxation and learning to drive on the "other" side of the road. We stayed in Christchurch, enjoying the British influence on the city and university architecture. The highlight was the southern "Alps" of NZ. The high peaks with snow reflect in the very blue glacier lakes, and the fiords are unbelievable. We then returned to Australia for a few days seeing the sites of Sydney. It was good to combine professional conversations with site seeing in this spectacular area of the globe. Arriving "home" to winter in Taipei brought all the summer fun to an end! Stay tuned for another update in the summer newsletter! VOLUME 12, ISSUE 2 Page 2 Jack Shaw Obituary Jack Shaw, Professor Emeritus of College Student Personnel Administration and long-time administrator at UNC, passed away on January 3 at the age of 96. Jack was one of the founders of the CSPA program, and was an active contributor to the program from its founding in the early 1960s to his retirement from UNC in 1972. Many alumni of the CSPA program were directly influenced through his mentorship, and students in CSPA and the HESAL program have benefited through financial support from the Dr. Jack Shaw Scholarship Endowment. We currently have four students receiving Shaw Scholarships. Many of you have also been influenced by the Shaw legacy through your studies with Jack's son, Dale, who has chaired the Department of Applied Statistics and Research Methods for a number of years and who teaches a number of the SRM courses taken by our graduate students. Memorial services were held in January and a floral arrangement was sent to the services on behalf of students, alumni, faculty and staff, in memory of Dr. Shaw. For those who wish to individually submit memorial gifts, the obituary suggests gifts to one of two funds -- the Dr. Jack Shaw Scholarship Endowment at the UNC Foundation and The Trinity Episcopal Church Shaw Memorial. We encourage cards of sympathy and appreciation for Jack's contributions to be sent to Dr. Dale Shaw, Campus Box 124, UNC. Dale and his brother and sister would appreciate hearing from many folks who they do not personally know, but who would like to acknowledge the impact that Dr. Jack Shaw had on their lives, their program, and their profession. The above photo was taken by Dr. Florence Guido-DiBrito at a department celebration a few years ago. Current Student Activities VOLUME 12, ISSUE 2 Page 3 Students & Alumni—What are they doing?
