Newsletter of the Flagstaff Flyers R/C Airplane Club January 2004 espite bad weather conditions thirty-eight people attended this year's dinner that was once held at the Sizzler. The dinner got underway at 6:15 with dinner. After dinner everyone was entertained by Durwood showing a video of pictures taken during 2004. Roses were passed out to the ladies and the kids received a gift certificate to Baskin's Robbins. Members of the previous board were recognized for their service and time as well as those members who chaired the different events held during 2004. Dawson Henderson was also recognized for his work with the club's web site. Next the new board of directors were introduced. The next item on the agenda was passing out awards to various members. After Durwood read the top ten things heard after a crash. Bob Gillette was given the coveted 'Crash Award' for being able to destroy 5 planes, two of which were done on the same day. The youth award was given to Nik Glassy which was presented by Phil Arnold. Best dressed at Beat the Heat (a joke photo) was given to Roger Jacobson. The 'Tree Climber' award for 2004 went to Roger Jacobson for putting two planes in the trees. Roger Jacobson presented Durwood Cline a plaque for President in 2004. All the members present were presented with radio neck straps. A door prize was held for the ladies present which was a gift certificate to Bath and Body Works, and was won by Deana Irvine. The Club members draw was held next, the following prizes D were won by members: Robert Hood – Sealing Iron, Hot Glove, and Foam Pad, Damien Glassy – Volt Meter, and Battery Pack, Steven Bailey – Starter, Bill Young – Clamp Set, David Irvine – Clamp Set, Curt Johnston - Prop Balancer, Harold Hasse – Transmitter case, Durwood Cline – Winged Raider, YuKun Zhou – Focus 4 radio set, Mike Bailey – Custom made Flagstaff Flyer Watch. For more pictures of the event go to our web site; www.flagstaffflyers.com. It’s time to renew the dues for 2005. As a reminder, if want to save yourself $10.00 then renew before the end of February because now the cost of one year is $25.00. On or after March 1 it will be $35.00. This issue of the newsletter has a form included, or you can get one off the web site, or Bill Young Hobby. Either mail in the application with your check or drop it off to Bill Young Hobby. Also remember to renew your dues to the AMA. Without it you will not be able to fly at the field. Above - Roger Jacobson reacts after receiving an award for best dressed at beat the heat. Or, I should say, back to the old style. My editorial column will go back to being called 'Off the Hanger Wall' as I am no longer the president. Speaking of President. How many noticed the front page of the Arizona Daily Sun dated January 11? An article showing our new president hard at work plowing snow. This may explain the reason why he wasn't able to submit an article for this month. At least I hope that's the reason. So in order to fill in the white spaces I've turned to anything I could find. Here's some of what's new. The Chino Valley club is planning a soaring contest like the one we hold in August. Right now the tentative date is set for June 12. Prizes will be given to first, second and third place. When I get more information I'll pass it along. Let's get our gliders ready! As most should know our invite to fly with the Cropdusters was canceled because of the bad weather. I was told that it will be rescheduled. As soon as we hear anything we'll pass it along. For those of you that have internet access don't forget to look at our web site periodically for the latest news, pictures and so on. I will be canvassing members shortly to see how many still want a newsletter sent by US Mail. I encourage members with internet connection to read the newsletter online. It saves us a tremendous amount in postage. On or around the first of March the combination to the gate will be changing. The new combo will be on the back of your membership card. Thanks about it for this month. Do you have anything you would like to have published? If so, send it my way. Bring your winter projects to show and tell..... Flying in the cold from the Twin City Flyers Now that the cold is here again, here are a few reminders about flying in freezing weather. 1. Keep the batteries in your flight box, ni-start, and radio equipment well charged. The cold cuts back on the efficiency of batteries. They donít hold their charge as long as in summer. Leave your radio, flight box, etc., inside your car or somewhere warm when not in use (as long as you leave your car running like almost everyone does). 2. Switch to a higher nitro content in winter (15%). The engine will run better because of the higher operating temperature. Keep your fuel warm too, if possible. 3. Keep your airplane in a warm place. It usually is the difference between getting your engine started and ready to fly or just going for a nice drive. A trick to tryóset your airplane under the engine of your car if you have the ground clearance to do so. If you keep your airplane in your car with the skis on, Maxx Products International, Inc. or MPI make sure when you bring it out you immediately push it around in the snow until the skis are cold, otherwise the (www.maxxprod.com) has made their charging jack snow sticks to the skis and the airplane wonít glide well. even better by incorporating a LED readout. In the winter, you can also connect an exhaust tube to having a readout of the charge the switch also to the muffler in order to keep the fuel from freezing to your airplane. If fuel freezes to the muffler, it is difficult to has a charging jack on the outside that features a dust cover and silicon rubber pad for vibration. Bill remove until you warm up the airplane. Then it runs all ordered several for both Futaba and Hitec radio over. Youíll probably have to richen the engine some, systems. but itís nice having a clean airplane to take home. For tubing, I use a piece of clear plastic fuel line that can be purchased in any auto store. A hose clamp will hold the tubing on, and to keep the clamp from coming loose due to vibration, Hot Stuff or epoxy works well. from the Twin City Flyers Newsletter Dan and Yvonne Twomey, editors Festus MO This is a revolutionary ignitor and glo-plug tester.
