The Newsletter, May 2006 (Vol. 6, No. 5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------The Church of the Ascension The Old Stone Church 13941 Braddock Road Centreville, Virginia 20120 (703) 830-3176 www.thechurchoftheascension.org Ascension Day Holy Communion and Dinner Our church’s patronal feast, The Ascension of Our Lord, occurs this year on Thursday, May 25th. A 7:00 PM Holy Communion service will be celebrated and a potluck dinner will follow. A Glorious Easter Day He is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. St. Mark xvi. 6; St. Luke xxiv. 34. We had a wonderful Easter Day celebration of our Lord’s glorious resurrection! The pews were full and even featured a few new faces. The Holy Eucharist was inspiring and renewing. The egg hunt following the service, thanks to Anna and Chrissi Lee, was also well attended and was appreciated by the parish’s youth. The flowers decorating the church, in memory of our beloved departed, were beautiful as always. Pictured left, James Saunders and Mary Cole Henshaw pose by the living cross in front of the church. Spring Clean-up May 20th The Spring Clean-up this year will be held on Saturday, May 20th beginning at 9:00 am. There is gravel to rake, hedges to trim, nursery toys to be sterilized, a rose bed to construct, pews to polish, an attic to organize, and housekeeping in the choir room to be done, among other jobs. Please notify Mike Fleming at cfleming@patriot.net or in church, if you plan to help. Successful Pre-Easter Clean-up A big thank you goes out to those who participated in the annual pre-Easter clean-up. Thanks to your efforts, the church looked lovely for the celebration of our Lord’s resurrection. The picture to the right shows the Davis family’s men and Junior Warden Mike extricating a large rock from the site of the church’s future patio. Prayer Requests Please keep Christine Cady, June Hooper, Father John Roddy, his son Tyler, and their families in your daily prayers. Birthdays May 30th, Susan Cady Anniversaries May 26th, Drew and Deedee Miller Term: Paschal Candle Large white candle representing the light of Christ and usually decorated with a cross, the Greek letters alpha and omega, the year, and five wax candles. It is lighted … at the beginning of the Easter Vigil and … burns at all services during the Easter season. [It is extinguished after the Gospel on Ascension Day.] (From A Dictionary for Episcopalians, Wall, 2000) Note from the (Substitute) Editor This month’s newsletter must look awfully plain compared to my wife’s more appealing, wellcomposed issues. I hope you will accept my apologies, for both its aesthetic shortcomings and the tardiness with which this issue was sent. Deedee will resume her duties as editor next month, perhaps with Susan Cady’s assistance. Susan will be taking the newsletter’s reigns after our (the Millers’) upcoming move to Seattle, WA in June. Your brother in Christ, Drew Millercharitable donations may be made by check or cash to The Church of the Ascension with memo line: Rector's Discretionary Fund. These donations are deductible for IRS purposes as they are made to the church, already a taxfree org. They do not go to the rector, but he distributes them. There is an ongoing need as I get requests almost every week.
