Missouri High School Rodeo Newsletter Spring, 2008
Well, this year’s Missouri winter has been very cruel to us. I know many of our members here in northern Missouri spent days without power after the December ice storm, we actually lost our internet and our computer crashed for a few weeks which made things almost unbearable for the young folks living in my house! Around here in north-Missouri, we’ve had ice or snow on the ground since nearly the beginning of late fall. It’s been nearly impossible to ride, let alone pull a trailer anywhere. We’ve had snow days for the first time in a few years.YIKES!! Still, our spring season is just around the corner. Our first two rodeos are indoors and hopefully the weather will allow us to reach our destinations safe and sound. We all may be unloading fresh, fat, furry steeds, but it will be great to see everyone again. Your first spring rodeo is just a few weeks away, and this newsletter contains all the important information you’ll need to maintain your eligibility, meet deadlines, and participate in fundraising opportunities and other special events. After you’ve read this newsletter, please pass it along to your folks, so they will be familiar with all upcoming events and obligations. Nearly every year at the first Spring rodeo, we have kids who have misplaced their back number or forgot to pack their cowboy hats or boots. Please spend a day or two to inventory your trailer and be sure you have everything you need for the first rodeo. The Spring season is shaping up to be extremely competitive as our Missouri cowgirls and cowboys, not only vie for a spot on the National Team, but participate in the Third Annual Missouri High School Rodeo Great Trailer Race. That’s right!!! One of our contestants is going to drive away from State Finals with the year’s use of a 2008 Keifer-Built, 3-horse, Living Quarters trailer OR for the first time ever this lucky contestant will have the option of choosing $1500.00 in CASH!. Good luck to all contestants! If, after you read this letter, you have any questions, don’t hesitate to e-mail me, Julie Ruggles, your MHSR State Secretary, with questions (ruggles@kvmo.net). Also, within a few days of receiving this newsletter, it will be posted on our website: http://highschoolrodeo.missouri.org.
The Great Trailer Race
Garry Norris, owner of Quarter Ridge Trailers, has once again agreed to donate the year’s use of a 2008 Keifer Built trailer. But for the first time ever the winning contestant may choose the option to accept $1500.00 in cold hard cash instead of the use of the trailer! In addition, Gary is: buying shirts for our National Team, donating 300 pounds of meat for our annual State Finals picnic, and donating $$$$ toward our Team Jackets. Gary developed the idea for the Great Trailer Race 2 years ago and is a huge supporter of Missouri High School Rodeo. Many of you may have seen last year’s Great Trailer Race Winner, Paige Magrath, and her trophy trailer at rodeos throughout the
Midwest. It’s a great opportunity to showcase Gary’s trailers and it’s a great opportunity for our contestants. Gary liked the idea of sponsoring Missouri High School Rodeo so well, that he is focusing on MHSR alone this year. We will have some new exciting news from Gary for the Fall 2008-09 season, so be watching! In the meantime our MHSR Great Trailer Race rules are identical to last year. Gary and his associates will be at many of our Spring Rodeos and I encourage everyone to visit Gary, take a look at his trailers and extend your deepest gratitude for his continued support of our Western Heritage and the great sport of rodeo. Gary and Quarter Ridge Trailers have special deals and great financing for MHSR contestants and their families. Check out the MHSR website or the enclosed flier for current special offers and information from Gary. Winning the trailer will be based primarily on arena performance, but will also include membership participation. Of the total points possible, 80% will be from performance and 20% will be from participation. The breakdown is below. Chris Johnson will be tracking the Trailer Race Points from your rodeo competitions and I will be tracking your participation points. You can call Gary at 816-863-3835 or visit his website at: http://quarterridgetrailers.co

If you are home-schooled, you need to submit a letter verifying your grades and your grade level (freshman, sophomore, etc.). Mail to: Julie Ruggles, MHSR State Sec. 13797 State Hwy D. Green Castle, MO 63544 OR Fax to: Julie at 660-488-6608 Also, to compete in the first rodeo, current members must have their sponsorship/calendar money ($300) turned in to MHSR Treasurer, Diane Connelly. Her contact information is below. For members who joined since the Fall season, your sponsorship money is due by the Ashland Rodeo, May 3, 2008. Colt Donated MHSR member Tell Ruggles, and his folks are donating a coming three-year-old rose grey quarter horse gelding to our association to be raffled off at our State Finals. This gelding is home raised and Blondey’s Dude and King bred. The gelding was not registered but the papers for that will be provided to the winning ticket holder if they so desire to have them. ―Phoenix‖ will be gentle, have good ground manners and be ready to start. Historically, we have made a lot of money on colt raffles, so this is a great gift to us. Please be sure and thank Tell and his folks for their generosity. Cowboy Prom Because so many of our contestants miss their own high school proms due to rodeo commitments, the MHSR hosts a Cowboy Prom each spring. The 2008 prom will be held at the Ashland Rodeo the weekend of May 3 rd and 4th. The Prom will be Saturday night from 8:00 pm to midnight, May 3. 2008. The Ashland Rodeo runs straight through, as we will have the Wranglers competing as well, we will run the High-Schoolers first on Saturday, at 9:00 AM, so they can get out early to prepare for Prom. Wranglers will run at the conclusion of Saturday’s High School performance, probably around 2:00 PM. The Prom will be held in Ashland at the Optimist Club building like last year, which is close by the rodeo arena. You will receive more information and details as the date nears. Typically, the girls wear formals or nice dresses and the boys wear tuxes or traditional western attire. You may ask a friend (outside our association) to attend with you, and many contestants prefer to attend without dates, as it is always a fun evening for all, whether you come with a date or solo. Parents are welcome, as well. Rodeo Secretary and Web Master Wanted Chris Johnson has formally announced that she will be ending her term as MHSR Rodeo Secretary at the conclusion of the 07-08 season State Finals. The MHSR Board of Directors will be accepting resumes from anyone who has an interest in pursuing this position. The Rodeo Secretary is a paid position and is for a term of 3 years. If interested mail or fax your resume to me, Julie Ruggles, your State Secretary. Resumes must be received by April1, 2008. Interviews will be held by the board of directors at the Marble Hill Rodeo. The person chosen to fill this position will be able to train with Chris through the rest of the season to help facilitate a smooth transition into the 08-09 season. If you have questions about what this position entails please feel free to call Chris, she will be happy fill you in. Chris’s departure will also provide an opportunity for someone to take over the volunteer position of Webmaster of the MHSR website. So anyone who has an interest in maintaining the MHSR website may also send their letter if interest to me, Julie Ruggles, and I will pass it on to the board of directors. This is a great opportunity for any mom, dad, or contestant to display their talents, so anyone interested please let us know! Mail, email, or fax your information to: Julie Ruggles 13797 State Highway D Greencastle, MO 63544

I have been passing out the NHSRA membership cards at the fall rodeos. If I failed to get you one, I have included it in your newsletter and I’ll have them again at Spring rodeo’s. You may be asked to show your card or give your number to take advantage of certain HS Rodeo savings, to enter MRCA rodeos, or to compete at Nationals. The Wrangler Division As you may recall, the National High School Rodeo Association started up a junior high division in 2005, called The Wrangler Division, for cowboys and cowgirls in grades 6-8. We have four spring rodeos at which we will host the Wranglers. Either the Wranglers will run separately or will run with us, depending on how the individual host committees/stock contractors wish to run the event. We ask that our MHSR cowboys and cowgirls (and their parents) help out, be good role models, and support the efforts of the up and coming rodeo athletes of the Wrangler Division. If you have friends, neighbors, or siblings interested in joining the Wrangler Division, have them contact Cindy Chasteen, Wrangler Division State Secretary. Her contact information is below. For more information, contact: Cindy Chasteen bandcchasteen@wmconnect.com 573-442-4648 or 573-819-2461 573-442-4648 or C 573-819-246 A Letter from your Student President Hello, to all returning members and new members. It’s me again, Austin Martin, your MHSR Student President. I am happy to welcome you to a great association. **** ATTENTION**** All student members will be receiving Dodge/Weatherby Riffle raffle tickets at the first spring rodeo. The ticket proceeds will be used for your state finals awards. We are asking that each member sell at least 20 tickets by the Ashland rodeo. THIS IS HOW WE ARE RAISING MONEY FOR FINALS AWARDS. ** All student event directors we are going to meet the judges before the first slack at Mt Vernon rodeo. Please bring your rule book with you in case we need to go over any rules for your event with the judges. This it to insure a smoother run rodeo with everyone knowing the rules before we start and to make sure the judges are familiar with our event directors and our rules. We need to BE UPSTAIRS AND AVAILIBLE FOR THE JUDGES BY NOON! Also senior scholarship applications will be available sometime in the near future. Julie will let us know when they are ready. Cowboy Prom is going to be at Ashland, May 3rd. The theme is Mardi Gras. We are planning to have special prizes for things like cutest couple, best dressed, weirdest couple and anything else mom and her committee can think of; as well as crown a new
king and queen for 2008. I hope all will plan to attend Cowboy Prom and get in on the fun. You never know what you might win. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you all at the general student membership meeting at the Marble Hill rodeo. We will meet at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, April 19th. So be safe and let’s have some fun, see ya later. Also remember myself and the other student officers are here to represent you and what you want to see done or improved with our association. So feel free to talk to any one or all of us at anytime. We will always make time to hear from you. Volunteers Needed to Create Gift Basket for National High School Rodeo Finals Each year, most states make a gift basket to take to Nationals and be auctioned off to raise money for the NHSRA Crisis Fund. Sandra Alden, Chris Johnson and Connie Martin have all put the basket together with great success in past years. We where unable to put a basket together last year but would really like to get that accomplished this year! This is a great opportunity to showcase MHSR, our state and our member’s generosity and talents! So if you have a passion for creating amazing baskets and/or would like to be a part of this opportunity to support the NHSRA crisis fund please contact me, Julie Ruggles, at 660-488-6825 or email me at ruggles@kvmo.net and I will be glad to get you started!
State Finals Program Ads We will begin the process of completing our State Finals Program. Whitney Watts and her sister Regina have graciously volunteered to coordinate this large project! Thanks again ladies! Read on closely as this is another way to earn points in the Great Trailer Race! The deadline for getting Ads in will be April 20,2008. Regina will need time to get the ads all put together and get them to the printer so we can receive our programs on time. Your ads do not have to be camera ready this year as Regina and her computer class will be designing them for you if needed. She will have the ability to send you a copy to approve if you contact her with your needs. The flier enclosed will give you all the information you need to place your ad in the Finals Program. Please do not wait to place your ad, Regina is volunteering her valuable time to us and I hope that we can thank her by not sending them all to her at the last minute!
Senior Video Your student President Austin Martin and student Vice President Kara Connelly will be putting together a senior video to be shown at our State Finals. All MHSR 08 Seniors are invited to be involved! They are asking you to provide them with a picture of yourself now and also a picture of yourself as a little cowgirl and/or cowboy! The deadline to get your pictures to either Kara or Austin is May 11 th. If you have questions please feel free to contact them!
Sankey Rodeo School . Once again University of Tennessee- Martin will be hosting their annual rough stock and bull fighting rodeo school in April at their indoor practice facility. The school will once again be put on by the professional staff from Sankey Rodeo Schools. Lyle Sankey, wife kathy and daughter Sasha are MHSR alums. This is a super chance for beginners to learn to ride in a safe, controlled, environment. For the more advanced students, it’s a time to hone specific skills that can mean the difference from ―just about placing‖ to a championship level of competing. Some kids attend to help perfect their favorite event, others are looking to pick up a new event, or to learn if rough stock riding is for them. There will be stock for all levels of experience, bucking machines, training equipment and drills, video replays of rides, and an evening classroom session. For those student-athletes that are looking for a college rodeo team or scholarship opportunities, it is a great chance to visit the UT Martin campus, meet the coaching staff and some current and past rodeo team members. The dates for the school are April 4, 5, and 6 th, and tuition is $390. For more information you may call the UTM Rodeo Office at 731-881-7426 or check out the Sankey Rodeo Schools website at www.sankeyrodeo.com. You can also contact me, Julie Ruggles, and I can mail, email or fax you the application you’ll need to fill out. State FFA Convention In an effort to increase membership, MHSR will have a booth at the annual FFA Convention in Columbia, April 18th 2008. If you would like to volunteer to ―man‖ the booth, please let Connie Martin know. We did this last year, and it was a lot of fun. We’ll have a roping dummy there, informational hand-outs on MHSR, candy, and a video of HS kids competing. It runs all day and we’ll need several volunteers. Please e-mail or call if you can help out. Connie will also have a sign-up sheet at the Mt. Vernon Rodeo so please see her and be part of this fun event! Wrangler Pocket Quilt Nearly every year, we have a parent volunteer design and sew a Wrangler pocket quilt. We then sell raffle tickets for the quilt, which is given away at State Finals. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. You do not need to be present to win. This is a fundraiser for our National Team and our scholarships. This is also an opportunity for you to earn more points in the Great Trailer Race. This year, Gina Gilman, stepped up to volunteer to put a new twist on our quilt design and make the quilt! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Gina. At one of our early spring rodeos, she will have the quilt ready for all you cowboy’s and cowgirls to sign, and we will also give you raffle tickets to sell. Please be sure and thank Mrs. Gilman for helping us out again this year. Seniors/Scholarships: Graduating seniors will have an opportunity to apply for Missouri High School Rodeo College Scholarships. I can answer questions for you and will distribute scholarship applications, but they need to be turned back in to Connie Morris. I will not accept them from you. Historically, we have three or four scholarships to give
away at the State Level. I will have forms available as soon as we have them completed. They are due back to Connie Morris by May 15, 2008. Connie’s contact information will be included in the scholarship packet. A committee will evaluate the applications and the scholarships will be awarded at State Finals. Silent Auction/ Volunteers Needed Historically, we have had a silent auction each spring, this year it will be held at the Marble Hill Rodeo. Each family is asked to bring at least one new (or almost new) item to be donated to the auction. Usually home décor or equine-related items sell best. Lynn Jobe will be heading up our silent auction, and she will need some folks to help. Please contact her personally at any time, OR look for the sign up sheets that will be on display at the Mt.Vernon rodeo! Contestants may turn in items at Marble Hill check-in and the auction will run Saturday, April 19 during the evening performance. The money raised goes toward travel money for the National Team. We will also run silent auctions during our State Finals. So, if you find any bargains out there, scoop them up for donations to our silent auctions. Letter from your MHSR Queen Mallory Cowger Howdie, Let’s get ready to rodeo!!! So, dust off that hat, get all your tack together, and start legging up your horse because the first rodeo is just around the corner. I would like to thank all of those who were pivots, carried flags, and who participated in the grand-entry. For this spring, I have some knew ideas that I think will be fun for the grand-entry. I have plenty of flags, so don’t be shy, come and get one! Last fall proved to be interesting when we had the fun day (volleyball, kickball, pick-up race, coed barrel racing and at Braymer the famous father/son foot race--Kelly vs. Tyler). Hopefully this spring we can do it again and maybe even more, i.e. egg-toss, water balloon toss, and some sort of relays on horseback or in our good ol’ boots!!! We could even challenge our parents to compete against us--The Teeny Boppers vs. The Rocken Chair Rollers!!!!! This spring also offers an opportunity for any young lady that would like to run for MHSR Queen. You must currently be a freshman, sophomore, or junior in high school and a member of MHSRA. Please fill free to talk with Sandra Alden, Queen Coordinator, or me. We will both be glad to answer any of your questions about the queen contest. We are also going to try and hold a meeting for those interested this spring. Be listening for more information to come on that. I am looking forward to seeing everybody as we kick off our spring rodeos!!!

An MHSR Member Announces Bid for Office
NOTE FROM JENNIFER WATTS Hello, my name is Jennifer Watts, and I would like to be your MHSR Student President for 0809. I am currently a junior and this is my 3rd year in MHSR. I feel that I would do a great job in representing you, the contestants, and be your voice on the board. During my 3 years in MHSR I have learned so much from so many different people. Not only are we great rodeo athletes but we are great people as well! Yes parents, that is a reflection on you! I would like for us to continue with MHSR rodeos but would also like for us to have some fun down time at the rodeos. I feel that it is important for your President to not only go to the meetings and vote and to make a lap around the arena during the grand entries, but to also help out in the arena when needed and not be afraid to go out and try to get awards donated or sponsorships for awards. I can represent us well in this area, as most of you know I am not afraid to talk! So, please keep in mind to vote for me at State finals for your next MHSR Student President. Thank you! Jennifer Watts
Note from Your MHSR Board of Directors To: MHSR Contestants and Parents From: MHSR Board of Directors RE: Suggestion Box Results Date: Feb. 9, 2008 Prior to the weekend of the Marble Hill Rodeo, Nov. 17-18, 2007, MHSR Board member Bondi Wood made up 200 copies of MHSR Suggestion Forms, along with a suggestion box to be placed at the rodeo. The purpose was to try to gather information from the membership regarding your concerns regarding our association. MHSR Board member Cindy Chasteen took the forms and the box to the rodeo and set them out. She also instructed the rodeo announcer to announce the location of the box and encourage participation. Cindy returned to Columbia with the box and on November 27, 2007, Bondi and Cindy opened the box and read each response. The responses were loosely organized into categories and Bondi wrote a report on the findings. The report was presented to the MHSR Board at their meeting on Jan. 5, 2008. Although there is nothing scientifically reliable about the numbers, below is a breakdown of the responses/suggestion. 200 suggestion forms were made available to the membership at the Marble Hill Rodeo. 53 completed forms were placed back in the box Two blank forms were in the box. There were:
11 on concerns regarding fuel costs, decreasing the number of rodeos and holding all rodeos at a central location 10 miscellaneous remarks/suggestions 9 on concerns regarding points, the draw, or the rodeo secretary 8 that signed their names (these people’s concerns can be directly handled by a board member, as they signed their names) 8 forms Cindy and I deemed as ―not helpful‖. They had no constructive criticism, were unrealistic in their expectations, hurtful, or we simply couldn’t understand them. 4 on specific rules 3 with multiple points to make
At the Jan. 5 MHSR Board meeting the following actions were taken by the board to address MHSR membership concerns and suggestions. Fuel Costs/Number of Rodeos/Central Locations: While MHSR Board members are, like all of us, suffering the financial burden of rising fuel costs, the Board made a commitment to hold two rodeos in each of the three regions—if we received enough bids from each region. We adhered to this in the Fall 2007 season and did again in the Spring 2008 season. With the exception of our State Finals, MHSR does not put on any rodeos. Host committees or arenas bid the rodeos and, based on many factors, we choose to accept or deny their bids. The MHSR Board also considers a host committee’s willingness to invite Wranglers and hold cuttings when approving rodeo locations. There is no central rodeo arena that has ever offered to bid more than one rodeo per season, making it nearly impossible to have all rodeos centrally located. However, the MHSR Board will continue to look at the issue of cost as they prepare for next season’s schedule. Also, if any member knows of an arena or host committee willing to bid a rodeo, please ask MHSR State Secretary Julie Ruggles for a rodeo approval application. Points/Draw/Rodeo Secretary: Your current MHSR Rodeo Secretary, Chris Johnson explained to the board that many of the suggestions or comments were inaccurate. While Chris has made some tabulation errors, she is quick to correct those, if contacted by the parent/contestant questioning the points. Without taking any official action, the board agreed that a parent volunteer could assist Chris in point tabulations at rodeos where prizes are given for all-around; at rodeos where Chris is responsible for both Wranglers and HS, and at State Finals. MHSR Board member Whitney Watts volunteered to assist Chris. The board did not direct Chris to make paper copies of points available at rodeos due to the cost. However, Chris will bring paper copies to anyone who requests them and does not have internet access to the points.
Any event director may witness the draw at any rodeo; however, once the draw has started, that event director must remain until the end of the draw and must remain quiet during the draw. The ―office‖ doors will be locked during the draw to reduce interruptions. Chris also indicated that she brings all timer sheets from all the rodeos with her to each rodeo, should any member have a question about points about any past rodeo. As Chris is resigning at the end of this year, the MHSR Board will have the opportunity to make up specific guidelines for the future rodeo secretary. More of your concerns regarding ―timely‖ posting of points, etc. will be addressed at that time. Specific Rules: While the MHSR Board cannot address specific calls made by judges; especially once the event is over, the Board is sensitive to the number of complaints about judges and rules violations. While the MHSR Board is guided by ground rules for 2007-08 that are unchangeable, they will address the issue of our future rodeo contracts being more specific on who is judging, along with that judge’s credentials. In the meantime, the MHSR Board has directed the MHSR Student Officers and Student Event Directors to meet with judges prior the beginning of each weekend’s rodeo. This student group will alert our rodeo judges to frequently missed calls; things to look for in specific events; rules that are different in our organization than others, etc. The students were very excited about this and believe that it will also heighten their standing as event directors as they will have met with and formed a relationship with the rodeo judges. Grievance Committee: The MHSR Board appointed a ―Grievance Committee‖ to address membership concerns. The Grievance Committee is made up of non-board members and includes one adult from each of the three regions and one student. You are still encouraged to contact your board members, but should you feel more comfortable dealing with the members of the Grievance Committee, they are working on a protocol to address your concerns/suggestions. The Grievance Committee is Seth Conner (North), Kathy Becker (Central) and Jeanne Cowger (South), as well as student member, Taylor Magrath. There is other information elsewhere in this packet with more specifics on the duties/roles of the Grievance Committee. Miscellaneous: Based on your suggestions, the MHSR Board is going to: Post all board meeting dates on the website, should anyone want to attend Post all board meeting minutes on the website, after they have been approved, should you want to read them Take copies of financial statements to each rodeo for you to view
Note from the MHSR Grievance Committee At the January MHSR board meeting a grievance committee was developed. The purpose of the grievance committee is to be a liaison between the board and the general membership. It is not to replace any of the duties outlined by our by-laws or the rulebook it was only developed to assist in providing input to the board. The four members of the grievance committee are Jeanne Cowger, Seth Conner, Kathy Becker and Taylor Magrath. If you do not feel comfortable going to a board member with your concerns or issues please do not hesitate to contact one of them. In saying that, please understand that they are not there to replace any member of the board or to change any calls made within the rodeo arena. Every board member had an opportunity to receive a copy of the questionnaires that were submitted at the fall Marble Hill rodeo. It is our hope that the board will address some of these concerns this upcoming spring season. In addition, some of the questionnaires brought up misconceptions or misunderstandings about how MHSR works within the National High School Rodeo Association, how the current board works, and how and when rules or ground rules can be changed. To help address this issue we ask all members to review their rulebook, the by-laws and their ground rules. A copy of each will be available at the next rodeo. In addition, Jeane Cowger has worked to address some of the issues brought up through the forms distributed at Marble Hill. A notebook with these forms will be available at the next rodeo. This notebook will try to answer how some of your concerns and recommendations were addressed. Please look for the notebook at the next rodeo. If you submitted a form, hopefully you will see that your input was listened to and appreciated. Finally, additional forms will be made available for all to fill out when they feel like they have a question, concern, complaint or complement. Hopefully by having these form available it will allow for a more positive flow of information for all involved.
Spring Schedule
The board has approved 7 weekends (14 rodeos) for the Spring season, as well as State Finals. Each of these 14 rodeos count for points. In addition, your MHSR Board has approved a stand-alone cutting for those members that cut. This event will be held in conjunction with the Missouri Ranch horse Association show at Midway and will be held March 8th. More information follows.
