May 18th Meeting Fort Worth AFSS
We will have representatives from the FW Automated Flight Service Station give us a program on the services available to the pilot and new services planned since they are now under contract to Lockheed Martin. This will be an interesting and informative program. Let’s see how much of the membership we can get out to this program. Come early (6:30PM) as we will be grilling up hamburgers with all the fixings!!
President’s Message
The program at last month’s meeting was on weather. I’m sure at times it seems we have many repeat programs. But with the storm season upon us it never hurts go get another reminder. I’m sure most of you have read about the loss several weeks ago of Scott Crossfield, the first to fly the North American X-15 rocket plane. According to the early NTSB report, Scott flew his Cessna 210 into a category 6 thunderstorm and it broke up. Scott was on an IFR flight plan and talking to the Atlanta Air Route Traffic Control Center. He was not issued any weather advisories or related SIGMETS by ATC. Scott asked to deviate to the south due to weather and radar contact was lost less than a minute latter. The recorded radar data indicated that he had entered a level 6 thunderstorm prior to the loss of radar contact. (read more at http://www.avweb.com/news/features/192130-1.html) So the next time you get ready to fly and the weather is a little iffy, think of that boring repeat weather program you had at the local EAA meeting. Know before you go and if there is any doubt, stay on the
ground. Experience and ATC are not always enough to save your backside when it comes to convective weather. If you want to learn more, there is some good reading on thunderstorms on the Naval Safety Center’s web site at http://www.safetycenter.navy.mil/aviation/articles/thunderstorm.htm Fly safe.

Fly Out to Sulphur Springs
- Danny Offill / Pictures by Rich Worstell
The trip to Sulphur Springs was a success as 9 planes flew in (1 from chapter 168) carrying 13 folks. The factory tour was very thorough and started at the parts lockup where every part is cataloged with bar codes for tracking. Every part on every airplane can be tracked all the way back to the manufacturer and supplier.
Legend has various jigs used for welding frames, assembling wings and empennage so the airplane will fly true. Legend has improved over the old J3 cub by incorporating several improvements of their own design and also modifications used in the super cubs. The cabin width has been increased by 3 inches. They are currently using Continental O-200 engines, but are also testing the Jabiru 3300. It should be noted that this aircraft can be flown from the front seat, unlike the original J3. They are also testing both straight and amphibious floats. Overall everyone was impressed with the quality of the product and the friendliness of the tour. And you couldn’t pass up a good dinner after the tour. Everyone has to eat…. Our next scheduled fly out is in June to Norman, OK for breakfast. This has always been a good trip. So let’s start coordinating empty seats with non-owners that would like to go along.
Chapter Planning Session, Dinner & Campout
Mark your calendars as all of the membership is invited to the Chapter Planning Session at “The Hangar” at Cedar Mills Marina June 10th starting at 1:00PM to plan the programs and events for the balance of the year. We have a lot of “TBDs” to be filled in. If you are unable to attend, please send your requests and comments to the newsletter editor at rprichardson@verizon.net and they will get included in the discussion. Your inputs are the only way the leadership can know what programs and events you would like to have. After the planning session there will a dinner starting at 5:30PM and a campout for those hardy soles on Saturday night. Please check with the marina office if you plan to reserve a cabin. The dinner will be provided with your pick of brats, hamburgers, or chicken. Please bring side dishes such as chips, baked beans, cole slaw, drinks of you choice, etc. for everyone to enjoy. So plan of a fun day, June 10th – fly in, drive in, or boat in.
Young Eagles at Bonham
Gary “The Rainmaker” Hill reported that the Young Eagle event scheduled at Bonham, May 6 was once again rained out. This was our third attempt. So, given Gary’s success right now, if you need rain, call Gary. All kidding aside, there are sure a lot of unhappy kids in Bonham. A new date will be scheduled and will be announced in the Newsletter. So, stayed tuned. These events are always fun when the weather cooperates.
