In 1993, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone), also known as rBST (recombinant bovine somatotropin), which dairy farmers use to increase milk production. rBGH is present in many (nonorganic) dairy products. Since companies are not required to label their products as containing rBGH, most people have no idea that it may be present in their milk, yogurt, or cheese.
