Rowell chosen to speak at Starr Commonwealth’s Founder’s Day

ALBION, MI - Actress, advocate, mother, former foster child and best-selling author, Victoria
Rowell has been chosen as this year’s guest speaker at the Founder’s Day celebration to be held
Sunday, Oct. 4 in Albion, Michigan.

Rowell is probably most recognizable as an actress on the daytime series “The Young and the
Restless,” but it is her passion for children and inspiring story as a foster child that motivated the
organization to select her. She has written a best-selling memoir and tribute about her childhood
in foster care, “The Women Who Raised Me,” which will serve as the foundation for her

“The month of May is National Foster Care Month, which provides opportunities to bring better
understanding about foster care, appreciate foster care families for their dedication and attract
new foster parent homes,” said Martin L. Mitchell, President and CEO of Starr Commonwealth.
“Having spent 18 years in foster care, Rowell became a passionate voice for children like herself,
and as an organization dedicated to the wellbeing of youth, we are grateful for her commitment.”

In 1990, she founded the Rowell Foster Children's Positive Plan (RFCPP), which enriches foster
children through artistic and athletic expression. RFCPP partners with many other
philanthropists, charities, foundations and businesses, including Sony, CBS Television, the “Dr.
Phil Show,” the Magic Johnson Foundation, the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, Samuel
L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Cedric The Entertainer, Lorna Kyles, Sharon
Stone, Camp to Belong, the California Endowment, and many others.

Through numerous awards and accolades for her efforts with foster care, adoption, human rights
and peace, Rowell has been recognized for her contributions in educating and supporting foster
children. She uses her celebrity status to bring a heightened awareness and understanding about
foster care to a national audience that includes major network television news and talk shows as
well as millions of readers of the country’s most read and respected magazines.

“It is our honor to host Ms. Rowell and we are eager to hear her inspiring story,” Mitchell said.
“Starr Commonwealth currently provides treatment and support to more than 250 children placed
in foster homes throughout Michigan and Ohio. We believe our youth, families and staff will
truly connect to and relate with Victoria Rowell.”
