New Lead Editor for Newsletter
ntroducing our new lead editor for the newsletter, Carolyn Schott . . . . My interest in family history was instilled, reluctantly, at an early age. I used to dread those long car trips to North Dakota every summer to "visit the relatives." But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to better appreciate my family connections and my Ger-Rus heritage. My first step was in planning a family reunion in 1980. But I didn’t start my serious genealogical research until about a year ago when I took a sabbatical from my job to complete my master's degree. Since both my mother and father are of Ger-Rus heritage, as I started digging into the family history, I found that I had connections to a lot of the Bessarabian villages. And I’ve really enjoyed making connections with third and fourth cousins—they seem to be all over! My interest in my heritage led me to Germany for two months last summer where I spent time learning German and meeting some Schott third cousins. I'm looking forward to working on the newsletter and would love to hear from you on what you'd like to see included. Carolyn Schott 13702 Densmore Ave N.
Heimatbuch der Bessarabiendeutschen
In issue 1-2 of this newsletter, on pages 15 and 23, we discussed this book being published in English and pointed to a fund at NDSU in Fargo that had been established to support this great undertaking. We discussed that we were estimating that we needed about $5,000 to make this happen. Well, folks, in our usual outstanding manner, the Bessarabian people ended up donating a little over $10,000 in support of this effort. Our earlier estimate, as it turns out, was low as some of What do you know/have about your historical Bessarabian families, the history of the village, or anything similar, that you would like to share here in the newsletter . . . . . please think about it and offer it up if you will . . . the translations have to be worked a little more than we had initially thought they would. But we feel at this time that the money donated should well suffice to get the book to market. As we go to press with this newsletter, we are not sure when it will be available for sale, but we will get the word out as As we start our second year, our Bessarabian thanks to Dale and all the volunteers who guided this newsletter through its first successful year!

Alt Posttal Celebrates 175th Anniversary
Descendents of Alt Posttal: you are invited to help celebrate the anniversary of your ancestral village’s founding on Saturday, September 6, 1998! The current local administration along with the Landsmannschaft der Bessarabiendeutschen are cosponsoring the celebration, including songs, poems, and a memorial plaque to commemorate the village’s founding. If you’d like to participate but can’t make the trip, you can contribute to the relief fund organized by the Landsmannschaft. This fund will buy supplies for current village residents in need—especially children, the elderly, and the sick. We spent a lot of effort and dedicated significant space in the last issue of this newsletter to reflect a logical approach for researching a Bessarabian fellow. We talked about Johannes WAGNER of Borodino. We exercised many of the items as listed on the pixel to the lower right on this page. However, we failed to mention one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb after we published the newsletter in January. That would be that we failed to contact either of the GRHS Village Coordinators regarding this Johannes Wagner fellow. We also did not bother to post on the Bess-GR listserver, to see if anyone may also have information regarding this fellow. As it turns out, both Ingrid Reule of Minden/ Westphalia (GERMANY) and Judy Remmick Hubert of Lafayette, California both have good background information of this part of the Borodino WAGNER family, and we should have talked to them early on in our research. 1848 Village Histories
The GRHS Clearing House has been pursuing a project to find and translate as many of the 1848 Village histories as we can find—into English. The desire is to place all of these English versions as we can gather onto the pixel. We have done quite well so far with that effort, and you will find many of the Bessarabian village 1848 histories posted already. A little background is in order to better understand the why and what of the 1848 histories. State Councilor E. von Hahn held the position of president of the Welfare Committee of German settlers in South Russia. The Gemeindeberichte were submitted to the Welfare Committee in accordance with a circular letter dated 8 January 1848 sent out by Councilor E. von Hahn to all of the mayors and school teachers enjoining them to undertake the writing of an historical account of the founding and development of the existing colonies. Adam Giesinger, author of From Catherine to Khrushchev, reflects that in 1848, there were 203 villages in the Black Sea Region. Some of these histories were published over the next few years in an Odessa German newspaper. It is thought that this was Hahn's original intent. However, in 1854, with the majority still unpublished, the newspaper stopped carrying them. They then lay forgotten in the archives of the former Supervisory Office in Odessa for about five decades. Early in the twentieth century, Konrad Keller, a Catholic priest, is accredited with "discovering" this valuable historical material. Keller used these histories in his two volumes of The German Colonies in South Russia, with volume 1 being published in 1905 and volume 2 in 1914. We should take special note that Keller's work does not contain these histories verbatim as written in 1848, but were included with material obtained from other sources as part of the work. In 1904, Pastor Jakob Stach used these histories in his book, The German Colonies in South Russia, and later edited a large number of the Gemeindeberichte for publication in German newspapers in the Black Sea Region. In 1926 and 1927 (or 1928?) Dr Georg Leibbrandt and a Catholic priest, Dr Josef A. Malinowsky, published 59 of the Gemeindeberichte for the Black Sea colonies in Germany. In 1941, Margarete Woltner published 114 of the Gemeindeberichte. Eight of these were previously unpublished, while the other 106 were reprinted from Russian German periodicals many of which had been edited by Stach. With the work of Leibbrandt, Malinowsky and Woltner, we can account for about 173 of the original 203 villages histories. Then, of course, we must consider the 17 other colonies that Keller used in his work. This accounts for about 190 of the 203 of these village histories. Some of these histories contained in Leibbrandt's work have been published in English for us. On page 149 of Homesteaders on the Steppe, The Odyssey of a Pioneering People, by Joseph S Height, he reports that all 19 of those in the Odessa area were Lutheran and then he says he included all of them in the book—but only 16 of the 19 are reflected. Some of the Gemeindeberichte have been translated into English and have been filmed by the LDS folks. Some have been re-translated again and published in the Heritage Review. We only knew about one other which had been translated into English when we started this project. The goal of this new project was to search out copies of those villages whose Gemeindeberichte had been translated into English, and go forward with volunteers and get as many of the rest of them translated as we can. During these early efforts it becomes obvious that the original work was written in different styles and by different dedications. To translate these works can become difficult because of some of the authors' methods of reflecting the history. They often reflected things in an inside-out method which is nearly impossible for an American-thinking, Germanfluent person to translate. It takes some very special talent to do the work correctly.

Terms Used in Bessarabia
This data has been collected and sent to us by Thomas K. Edlund, senior librarian of Slavic Bibliography Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. We must thank Thomas for keeping us in mind and sharing this data with us. Thomas has also signed a release so we can also put it on pixel. Balka -a deep steppe valley bottom, originally a channel of a brook or river; now the channel of a spring or of an autumn stream. This word is mainly used in the Southern districts (uezd) of the Bessarabian Region. The origin of this word probably came from the Moldavian word vale. Chamurnyya stroeniya-a building made from clay mixed with straw. Chepy-variant of karchi. Dacha -a plot of arable, hay-making land; sometimes with a garden, kitchen garden or forest. Derevnya -peasant settlement without a church, having less than 100 homesteads. Dyaly -Moldavian word probably related to the Tatar yayla, dzhiyla. Refers to any mountain or mountain range. The summits are called munte from the Latin mons-mountain. Galery -galley. Specially constructed ships for sailing the Dnjestr River. Gardy -weirs or barriers for fish. Girlo -Turkish word that refers to the narrow mouth of the river running into the sea. Karch -mud covered, submerged stumps and trees common during flood season. Kishla -Moldavian word meaning khutor, or small village. Khutor-Settlement of one to three homesteads, with arable, hay-making land, gardens, kitchen gardens, and sometimes a forest. Khutors were organized mainly at sheep-folds for cheese making. Kodry -Moldavian word derived from kodru, a coniferous forest, or kodure, a forest). This is the name of the woody mountain area in the middle Bessarabia, between Kishinev, Beltsy and Orgeev. Koloniya -a settlement in Russia made up of foreign immigrants, such as Germans, Bulgarians, etc., and refers mainly to agricultural communities that enjoyed special rights. This word pre-1800 referred to Jewish farm settlements. Korchma -a tavern or inn at a coach station. Kuchugory or Kuchugury -sandy hills upon moving dunes. Liman -estuary. Sea bay formed by the wide mouth of large rivers; some limany develop into lakes when damned by sand from the seashore. Lochshina -a hollow. A gully or balka adjoined to a large river. Mare-the Moldavian word “big”. Mik-the Moldavian word “small.” Munte-from Latin mons, a high mountain; the highest point in a range of mountains (dyaly). Myza-an economic establishment organized at cattle yards. Mestechko-settlement with special rights (almost city rights) to commerce. Nou-Moldavian word “new”. Odaya-Moldavian word meaning khutor. Plavni -flats. Swampy banks on the lower reaches of the Dnjestr, Prut, and other large rivers. Plavni are covered with bushes and reeds. Polovina, Pol -half ... of village, e.g Pol-Puhotin, Pol-Mendykoutsy, etc. Sometimes the name of settlement separated from a parent village, or separate parts of a land area belonging to different owners or departments. Posad -settlement consisting solely of merchants and manufacturers, who have city rights according to their social estate. Predmest'ye -suburban sloboda (i.e a settlement exempted from normal state obligations); yet remaining part of the city land area and administration. Puchshi-large groups of under-water karch (i.e. sunken rafts or trees stuck on the bottom of a river). Rezechi -peasants who owned certain parts of land (rezeshiya) according to the Russian right of property. The

smallest parts were called parmaki, and their owners parmakari. In some villages the measurement of land was the lapot. Sat-Moldavian word means village or settlement in general. Selenie -settlement with no more than 300 homesteads and without church. Selo -settlement with more than 300 home-steads and with the church. Skit -religious communities where monks and nuns lived as individuals, in separate houses. Sloboda -Moldavian slobodzeya. Settlement where citizens had special rights because they belonged to the estate Ruptachi. This word used also as settlement ( vyselok). Stanitsa -Cossacks settlement or a settlement belonging to the department of the Novorossiysk Cossack army. Tabor -temporary gypsy settlement on the steppe or in a forest. Troyan -ancient swell that can be found in different areas of the Bessarabia region; mainly this name was used for the huge swells which crossed Bessarabia from the Dnjestr River to the Prut River (Benderskiy and Akkermanskiy districts). Tsarany -from the word tsara, or land. Refers to peasants who had personal freedom to settle on their own lands. Urochishche -Settlement separated or evicted from the village. Uchastok -a plot. Separate plot of populated or non-populated land. Vale -Moldavian word origanally from the Latin vallis-valley; sometimes used to mean the channel of the river which

On January 14, 1929, it was 18 years since I came to Fere Champenoise [Alt Elft] for the first time. The Honorable Evangelical Lutheran Consistory in St. Petersburg had designated me as vicar of Fere Champenoise parish, which was vacant at the time. After I had preached in all the parish villages, I was elected unanimously on February 18, 1911 in a parish meeting led by Pastor Arthur Hanson of Arcis. It seems important for me to say something about myself. I was born on July 31, 1863 in Oppekaln/Livonia and when baptized received the name Johann Karl Alexander. I received my first instruction at home, then in the elementary and then the regional school in Walk. I completed my gymnasium studies (high school). I took this exam in l890 in St. Petersburg. I had my vicarage for the preaching ministry in the German colony Lessno - Karamysch (Grimm) municipality of Saratov. Then I was pastor for 10 years (1898 - 1908) in Platbust Municipality of Uta. Then pastor in Lasdohn, Livonia from where I moved in January 1911 to Fere Champenoise. My call Document in Fere Champenoise included the following information: We the signers and representatives of the Evangelical Lutheran Parish of Fere Champenoise, province of Bessarabia, herewith call Pastor Alexander Simmont as our parish preacher and promise as soon as our election according to Article 412 of the 1st part of the 11th volume of the Book of the Law of the Empire (1896 edition) has become judicially valid, to provide for Pastor A. Simsont the following benefits, income, and provisions without reduction). 1. We will pay for the support of our called and from a high authority confirmed pastor, the yearly sum of 1200 rubles (2600 Mark?) ($1508?). 2. Our Pastor is to have the unencumbered use of 120 Desjatine (324 acres) of parish land and 5 - 1/2 acres of garden land. If the pastor relinquishes the administration of parish lands to a commission elected by the parish, then we commit ourselves having the pastor receipt all income, however if this income over a period of years should produce less than 1500 rubles (3161 Reichmark) ($1,833) yearly, then we commit ourselves to augment it, that it will be at least 1500 rubles on a yearly basis. 3. We commit ourselves to keep the manse at all times in a good state of repair as well as the out buildings and to carry out all repairs promptly at our cost. 4. For the heating of the manse we will pay our pastor 160 rubles yearly ($183). 5. In terms of ministerial fees, the pastor of the parish has the right to ask for the following: For every wedding which takes place in the church one ruble. For every church certificate, 60 Kopecks. 6. For all ministerial acts outside of the parish village as well as for al1 church festivals and conferences within Bessarabia the pastor receives free transportation (horse and buggy). 7.
