GUIDELINES FOR REQUESTING TEACHER LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION October 1: Deadline to request a teacher or college counselor letter of recommendation for ED/EA/REA applications. November 15: Deadline to request a teacher or college counselor letter of recommendation for regular decision deadlines. 1. Approach two of your teachers before the above deadline and ask if you may have a moment of their time. Ask if he/she would be willing to strongly recommend you to a college/university. Do not assume that they can or will. Depending upon the program you are applying for, they may require a recommendation from a specific teacher, such as; math, art, science, etc. 2. Make sure each teacher has the proper information needed to write an informed letter of recommendation. These forms include: (1) Teacher Evaluation Form (from the college application) (2) Letter of Recommendation Request Form (3) Senior Recommendation Information Form (4) Senior Parent Questionnaire/Parent Letter 3. Your college counselor will make copies of your Senior Recommendation Information Form and Senior Parent Questionnaire/Parent Letter, when completed, to give to your teachers. Get these forms to your college counselor by the time you’ve requested the recommendation from your teacher. Originals will be placed in your college file in the College Counseling Center 4. Be sure to put your name and address on each and every form. If the college application packet does not include a Teacher Evaluation form, please see your college counselor to pick up a “standard use” form. 5. Give each teacher who is writing a letter for you the application deadline for each college. Also, let teachers know that Justin-Siena also has an earlier deadline in order to “bundle” your college materials before mailing them off to the various colleges. 6. A good letter of recommendation takes time to write, so please give your teachers the courtesy of requesting your letter in plenty of time. Also keep in mind that they are writing letters for many other students. 7. It is professional courtesy to send your teachers a thank you note for their time. 8. In March/April, be sure to inform your teachers of your admission acceptances. They have played an important role in your application process; invite them to enjoy your success.
