      NPC 3 & HLG3
  March 31st to April 4th, 2009

   Ponta Delgada, Portugal

Portas da Cidade (City Gates) - built in the XVIII century
 Meeting dates:

Wednesday, 1st of April - Friday, 3rd of April, 2009.

 The Azores

Welcome to the Azores! An outline of garden-like islands on the horizons of the
Atlantic Ocean. With their high craters, boiling pools, subtropical vegetation,
cascading waterfalls, friendly people, and mild climate, the islands really must
be seen to be believed. Originated by volcanoes, eroded by time, and
manipulated by the inhabitants, the islands have maintained their splendour
and beauty.

Because these once uninhabited, remote islands were settled sporadically over
a span of two centuries, their culture, dialect, cuisine and traditions vary
considerably from island to island. Farming and fishing are key industries that
support the Azorean economy. 240,000 Azoreans live within the archipelago’s
868 square miles.

Along the seashore, several beaches, natural and municipal pools are an
invitation. Parks and gardens, where interesting botanic species grow, are
waiting for your visit.
 The City of Ponta Delgada

S. Miguel (São Miguel), known as "The Green Island", is the largest and most
populated island of the Azores as well as the home to the Presidency of the
Autonomous Region of the Azores. S. Miguel Island has a surface area of
approximately 293 square miles (759 km2). S. Miguel's population is around
150.000 inhabitants.

The Island diverse scenery is a pleasant awakening to visitors. Its beautiful
lakes, sandy beaches, rolling hills, high mountains, green plains, and blue
Ocean exults a sense that sometime somewhere Switzerland and Hawaii had a

S. Miguel is also the island in the Azores with the most offers. Its cosmopolitan
town of Ponta Delgada (50 thousand habitants) offers the visitor a blend of
contemporary amenities with a historic flavour. Its monuments, turn of the
century architecture, parks and cobble stone streets are interlaced with a
modern marina, nice restaurants, shopping, bars, night-clubs, and ocean-front

 Meetings’ place:

Teatro Micaelense (Theatre of S. Miguel)

Teatro Micaelense Centro Cultural e de Congressos, SA
Largo S. João - Edifício Teatro Micaelense
9500 Ponta Delgada
S. Miguel - Açores - Portugal
Phone: (+351) 296 308 340 Fax: (+351) 296 308 344

Dated from 1865, Teatro Micaelense has testified the course of Portuguese
History throughout the 20th century. It survived the fall of the Monarchy and
the rise of the Republic; from its doors, young men were departed to fight in
the First World War. Right since the very first moment, it was a cultural and
educational centre, a social intervenient in the causes of poverty and disease.
By mid-30s a violent fire put an end to it all. The newspapers of that time
described it as one of “Azores most sad moments in all its History” and it took
more than 20 years to be re-built.

On the 29th of March, 1951, the Theatre re-opened, in clear symphony with
Ponta Delgada major constructions during the Decade. Although the eighties
and nineties were decades of rampant crises, during which the Theatre almost
closed for insufficient income, a new administration brought it to live (once
again) in 2001, by expanding it’s core action to far more then cultural activities,
becoming a space with great potential for conferences and seminars.

Proud symbol of S. Miguel’s people, it has welcomed on its stage some of the
best musicians and plays of the world; a stage with more than a century of
History but that keeps its eyes upon the horizon.
