PHOTO: BRIAN HAWKES The newsletter of The School of Music at The University of British Columbia LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR In our sixth High Notes , we continue with an expanded format which is now complemented by our revamped, and allaround beautiful new website. If you’ve never visited the “virtual” School of Music, I urge you to point your browser to www.music.ubc.ca . You’ll find a complete calendar of events, detailed information about the School, its people and programs, past issues of High Notes , and news. The website is not the only new thing at the School this year. I am so pleased to announce three new faculty members. We were fortunate to be able to select two new violin instructors for the Strings Division, and a new instructor for the Voice Division. The field of candidates for these positions was incredibly strong, and I’m delighted that all short-listed candidates were Canadian. Jasper Wood and Eugenia Choi are brilliant violinists of international reputation, and Roelof Oostwoud has sung throughout the world. They’re fantastic new additions to the faculty, and I welcome them. As well as our new faculty, our “old” faculty continues to excel. Jane Coop and David Mezter were honoured as Distinguished University Scholars, Bob Pritchard received the Killam Teaching Award, and Stephen Chatman the Dorothy Somerset Award. That is just a small selection of the honours bestowed upon our outstanding faculty. Among other new initiatives, the recently established fund in the name of the late Professor Emeritus Cortland Hultberg was awarded for the first time this year, and we welcome contributions to this and other scholarships that support and attract top students. I hope High Notes will inspire you to learn something new, attend a concert by an artist new to you, visit the website or make a pledge to the School. Don’t hesitate to write to us with any questions or comments about the material in the newsletter, or about the School in general. PHOTO: AMIN TOUFANI Linda Kaastra, DMA student (bassoon), and Sachiyo Takahashi, visiting artist, (Noh flute/recorder), performed and presented a paper on the Tooka at the New Interfaces for Musical Expression conference in Hamamatsu, Japan in June. They composed an original piece based on the technical and musical features of the Tooka, a two-person wind controller built by Dr Sidney Fels in the Human Communication Technologies lab at UBC. Created as an exploration of two-person musical instruments, their research looks into ways people communicate non-verbally, gesture in live performance, and at creative interaction. The Tooka uses two identical sections of hollow flexible tube connected by a plastic connector to form one continuous tube. At each end are a mouthpiece, four buttons and a pressure sensor. Attached to one side is a bend sensor, which responds to flexing of the tube. To play the Tooka, each player puts their mouth over opposite ends forming a sealed tube modulating the pressure to control sound using their tongue, cheeks, pharynx, or diaphragm. Four buttons may be used to control mode changes, such as pitch. To find out more visit http://www.ece.ubc.ca/ ~ hct/ research/twopersons/ . 17 School of Music 6361 Memorial Road Vancouver, B.C.
