Brookside Students Help Those in Need
Brookside’s Student Council will once again sponsor a food drive to help those in need in our community. The food drive will take place from March 16 – 27. Please send in canned goods and all non-perishable items. There is nothing more important than teaching our students the importance of giving to those who need it most.
NYS Math testing for students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take place from March 2nd – 6th.
KUDOS
Huge congratulations to Gabriella Klengler of Class 5P. Gabi won the District Spelling Bee in January and will be representing the Baldwin School District in the Nassau County Spelling Bee on March 19th. Way to go Gabi!
Book Fair
Our Spring Book Fair will take place on Wednesday, March 11th. This is always a great opportunity to select books to read with your child. Parents are welcome to come and browse the wonderful selection of books available. Parent volunteers are needed to assist our students at the Book Fair. Parent-Teacher Conferences
Formal Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on Thursday evening, March 19th from 6:30-9:30 and all day (8:30-3:00) on Friday, March 20th. If you do not already have an appointment, please contact your child’s teacher immediately. A Baldwin parent recently brought a concern to the district – that Baldwin does not have its fair share of state aid, which has negatively impacted school taxes. PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) Program
PARP begins on Monday, March 9th. It will run through Friday, March 20th, even though school is closed on the 20th. All students’ reading logs are due on March 23rd. Our culminating celebration for PARP will take place on Wednesday, March 25th. The theme of this year’s PARP is “Catch the Reading Bug.” Our coordinator, Loretta Crespo, will be sending home reading contracts, activity booklets and reading logs shortly. Each classroom teacher will coordinate their own times for you to come and read to your child’s class. Hopefully, you were able to attend the Pre-PARP event at Baldwin Public Library during the February break. Remember, the key to a successful PARP experience is for you and your child to read together for 15-20 minutes every night, not just during PARP. If you are not available every day, encourage another family member to read to and with your child each day. You are your child’s first teacher and can make the biggest impact in your child’s literary world.
African-Americans in Sports Celebration Site-Based Team
Congratulations to our students who did such a wonderful job researching and learning about different African-American athletes. Our celebration on February 24th was outstanding. A special thank you to Brandon Moore who flew in from Arizona, to join us for this special event. Mr. Moore’s words of inspiration will be remembered by all who attended.
Important Reminder
If you have requested homework for your child when they are out of school, please do not forget to pick it up. In addition, requests for student’s work must be made in the morning when you are calling in your child’s absence. Please do not forget to inform the office of how many days you would like work for. If you are not sure then please call each day.
