IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT GLOBAL CHILD MORTALITY
• Nearly 10 million children under age 5 die each year, almost all in developing countries, from preventable and treatable diseases such as diarrhea, pneumonia, malaria and measles In other words, 30,000 children under age 5 will die in the next 24 hours from preventable and treatable causes Nearly 4 million newborn babies die each year before they are one month old – the equivalent of all babies born in the US each year Around 2.5 million newborn deaths could be prevented annually by improving access to lowcost, low-tech interventions based particularly on education to pregnant women and mothers of newborn babies The international community’s “Child Survival Agenda” remains unfinished and in some cases hard-won successes in saving children’s lives are being reversed The United Nations’ goal to achieve a 2/3 reduction in child mortality by 2015 will not be reached unless newborn mortality is cut by at least half
