FAITH COMMUNITY GROUP LETTER FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:
September 29, 2006
The Honorable Dirk Kempthorne
Department of the Interior

Subject: Cooperative Conservation Listening Session Comments
Dear Secretary Kempthorne:
We represent a few of the many religious traditions that view conservation of
God's earth as a sacred trust. This joyful obligation is partially fulfilled through
effective cooperative conservation and also as environmental laws are
implemented that protect air and water, wild lands, endangered species, and
Addressing environmental degradation is a major task. However, we have seen
that when environmental laws are fully put into practice, we can make a positive
difference. For example, there have been improvements in water and air quality,
and the vast majority of listed endangered species survive, while a number are
on the road to recovery.
Thus, full implementation of laws like the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and
Endangered Species Act, accompanied by adequate funding, helps us meet our
responsibility to safeguard God's earth. As the Administration considers various
cooperative conservation measures, we urge you to do so within the context of
support for environmental laws and with the recognition that such laws help
create the climate that encourages cooperative cooperation.
Thank you for considering our concerns.
