"I didn't even know how to ride a horse before I applied. I took lessons and was selected for the job. It was wonderful," she says.For four years after graduating from the academy, she rode car patrol alone. Soon she found herself chasing a fellow who had stolen his girlfriend's car. For part of the chase, the girlfriend hung on to the hood of the car, but was eventually thrown off. [Patty Gravatte] chased the car into a parking lot driveway and exited her car yelling at the driver. "Stop the car. Throw out the keys. Stop." He shoved the car into reverse with the intent of running Patty down. She shot. Although she didn't hit the driver, when the rear window shattered, he stopped and gave himself up."Usually the ones that don't pass have physical limits, such as after knee surgery not being able to drop to one knee quickly or their eyesight has changed. As we get older we get slower. And some simply suffer from test anxiety. But their job depends on them being able to shoot well."
