Arguing against the position of Jeremy Cohen, Fredriksen holds that Augustine's adoption of Psalm 59: 12 ("Slay them not lest thy people forget") as an interpretation of Jewish life within Christendom was a late development. Because this injunction appeared in The City of God, it ensured that Jewish lives were spared at various times in die history of the Latin western church, notably during the Second Crusade.
