Revisiting the VII Vision
• Provide a mechanism for wirelessly sending and receiving
  information to and from vehicles, and between vehicles to:
  – Improve safety:
     • Vehicle-to-vehicle warnings and collision mitigation solutions
     • Roadside-to-vehicle warnings: intersections; roadway weather, incidents, etc.
  – Improve mobility though probe data and in vehicle signage
     • Improve traffic flow information
     • Enhanced roadway utilization; (better signal timing; control of traffic flow; more
       responsive and efficient roadway maintenance)
     • Flexible and efficient tolling concepts (congestion pricing, etc.)
  – Allows for commercial operations…. private services to offset
    operating costs
     • Concierge type services
     • Vehicle warranty and diagnostics
     • Other commerce applications (payments and advisories)

      5.9GHz DSRC Infrastructure
The world’s first 5.9GHz DSRC infrastructure is deployed for VII projects




    VII POC created a common foundation for 5.9GHz DSRC
    cooperative infrastructure. Demonstrations utilizing this framework
    are expected during the 2008 ITS World Congress in New York.

     Safety : Preliminary Conclusions

• Observations and findings
 – Vehicle “heartbeat” messages have been successfully sent and
   received among multiple vehicles
 – Early tests indicate system supports transmission of signal phase
   and timing and intersection maps.
 – Message priority testing has not yet been completed
• Preliminary Conclusion
 – V to V safety applications can be supported
 – Applications such as cooperative intersection collision avoidance
   systems can be supported ( pending tests to determined
   prioritization of safety messages)

 – Vehicle data (probe data) can be collected an subscribed to
 – Traveler information messages can be delivered to vehicles at the
   intended time and location
 – Dynamic off board routing can be achieved across a non
   contiguous network

 – The system supports the major elements required for providing
   envisaged mobility solutions including probe data collection,
   advisories and dynamic route guidance

 Commercial :Preliminary Conclusions

 – Private services between individual vehicles and backend service
   suppliers can be supported
 – Large sessions can be supported as the vehicles moves form RSE
   to RSE
 – Payments and invoicing can be supported at high speed
• Preliminary Conclusion
 – The system can support a variety of commercial services that
   require individual two way communications across a non
   contiguous network.

                   Initial Findings…
• Applications
 – Heartbeat messages can be exchanged between moving vehicles
 – Safety link messages can be wirelessly communicated to vehicles
 – Probe data can be wirelessly collected by DSRC and can be
   subscribed to through the network
 – Signage messages can be wirelessly pushed to the vehicles and
   displayed
 – Large files such as those required for Off Board Navigation can be
   communicated across the non contiguous network
 – Electronic payments can be conducted at speed
• Initial Conclusion
 – DSRC wireless communication together with the POC network
   architecture can serve diverse applications required for safety,
   mobility and commercial applications

        POC Project Accomplishments
                    The VII concept became a reality.

Representation of Government-Industry Collaboration
• Results from VII WG and ELT discussions are reflected within the
  real testing environments in Michigan and California.
• The same concept spreads to New York for World Congress.
Creation of Cooperative Environment
• Nine OEMs and many major suppliers participated in this joint effort.
• POC served as a junction of government agencies, automotive
  companies, and infrastructure industry partners.
Implementation of Proposed Technologies
• IEEE 1609.2 and IEEE 802.11p standards are implemented
• VII architecture is implemented

              Value of POC to OEMs
               Competitors Joined in a Cooperative Effort

Sends a strong, unified message
• Government agencies (both federal and state) and automotive
  industry are very serious about further investment for VII.
• Indicates that the use of 5.9GHz DSRC for cooperative vehicle-
  infrastructure and vehicle-vehicle safety systems is appropriate.
• Shows the VII concept and supporting technologies work within real
  world conditions.

OEMs moving forward
• Each OEM now has VII test vehicles for additional development
  toward product deployment and a local test environment to utilize
• POC has created a fair-and-equal work environment for healthy
  competition

            Creation of “VII Team” within OEM and among OEMs


Acceleration of Internal Technical Development
• Joint efforts toward POC laid a technical foundation for OEMs to shift our
  gear to “D (Development)”
• Joint POC exercise allowed OEMs to assess technical viability of VII much
  more efficiently and effectively than doing is separately.
• Early involvement of supplier community in developing POC systems should
  benefit the automotive industry as a whole to accelerate the VII deployment

Creation of Internal Framework for Deployment Analysis
• Provided excellent opportunities for VII knowledge-building for executives.
• Creation of “VII Team” within each OEM.
  – United engineers and legal/regulatory experts
  – Parallel activities on legal & regulatory analyses are underway.
