							LAB LETTER
TO THE PARENTS OF SCIENCE STUDENTS

It is unfortunate that the decline in state and district funding to schools, and departments within
schools, has coincided with the rising costs of laboratory materials in our economy. The science
department, which relies on consumable materials and web-based assistance for students, is
continually impacted by rising costs. Therefore, for the past several years the science department
has previously requested a lab donation from each student, as it has become increasingly hard to
provide the type of materials to our students without the help of the Skyline community.

A typical science class of 32 students spends approximately $500 in consumable laboratory
materials throughout the school year. Furthermore, costs are associated with the use of visuals,
manipulatives, and web-based sites that assist the students’ understanding of complex concepts
and principles, and support class projects.

To support our classroom efforts, we respectfully recommend a lab donation of $15 per student,
and if economically feasible a donation of $20 to $25 is greatly appreciated. If you have a strong
opposition or would be financially impacted by this request, please be aware that our science
classes will still receive the highest quality of education as possible with the resources available.
