Objectives of this assignment: Develop a professional résumé that is acceptable for job applications Create a persuasive letter of application (cover letter) for a potential employer Due Date: Wednesday, September 17 (hard copy at beginning of class and electronic copy of resume and letter in Turnitin.com) Grading: 5% of course grade. Grading criteria will include: Letter o Proper heading and address for employer, and return address o Opening: identifies the job you are applying for, and would interest the reader in you o Body: identifies selected items from your background that highlights your qualifications o Closing: provides contact information, thanks the employer and requests an interview Résumé o Use of active verbs o Clarity and completeness o Formatting and neatness Both: Correct grammar, spelling and punctuation Assignment: Create a résumé in a format appropriate for your field of study, work experience, and job goals (for example chronological vs. functional, scan ready format vs. multiple column paper format). Write cover letter to go with your résumé to apply for a job you are interested in. Guidelines: 1. Create and perfect your résumé 2. Log on to the SJSU Career Center (http://careercenter.sjsu.edu/) or one of the other on-line resources that offers job lists (www.craigslist.org/, jobsearch.monster.com/, hotjobs.yahoo.com, etc.) 3. Identify a job announcement of interest to you and print it out. 4. Use Internet resources to find out more about the company. 5. Write your cover letter, 12 point font, single spacing and 1- inch margins. Use a business letter format and sign it. 6. Turn in letter, resume and a hard copy of the job announcement.
