These four (4) $500.00 scholarships are one-time grants, designed to assist students pursuing further education. The scholarships are intended to recognize outstanding graduating athletes at LaPlata High School (LPHS). Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their success, perseverance, dedication, sportsmanship, leadership and academic achievement. To be considered for a scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria:
1. Athletic Participation. Applicant must be a 12th-grade student in good standing at LaPlata High School, who has participated as an athlete in at least one high school sport for a minimum of two full seasons. The applicant’s athletic record will be verified by the Athletic Director’s office after submission of the application.
2. Academic Achievement. Student must have a minimum cumulative high school grade point average (through the end of the current third quarter) of 80% on a 100% scale. The applicant’s GPA will be verified by his/her guidance counselor after submission of the application.
3. Higher Education. Student must plan to enroll in an institution of higher learning within eight months of graduation from LPHS. Such institutions include not only colleges and universities, but also technical and vocational schools and institutes.
4. Financial Need. Financial need is not a consideration.
5. Application Form. Student must complete and submit the application on the prescribed form to his/her guidance counselor on or before March 13, 2009.
6. Recommendations. The applicant must acquire two (2) recommendations, one (1) recommendation from a coach and one (1) recommendation from a teacher. The applicant must fill in his/her name and the name of his/her guidance counselor on the recommendation form before giving it to each teacher/coach. Be sure to distribute the forms to the teacher/coach early enough so that he/she can complete the recommendation in a timely manner.

The teachers and coaches are being asked to return the completed form directly to the student’s guidance counselor. However, the student is ultimately responsible for following up with his/her teacher and coach to ensure that the recommendation forms have been submitted to the guidance counselor on or before April 3, 2009.

7. Interview. The Scholarship Committee will set up interviews for those applicants who are considered finalists based on the above criteria. Awardees will be chosen based on both the written application and the interview.

Application Deadline is March 13, 2009 Scholarship winners will be announced at the Senior Awards Assembly. Each award will be made payable to the student and will be distributed by the LPHS Financial Office upon proof of payment to an institution of higher learning (i.e. first tuition payment). In the event the selected student fails to enroll and commence attendance at a qualifying institution within eight months after graduation from LPHS, the scholarship will be forfeited. Funds may be used for tuition, books and instructional materials, and/or on-campus room and board.
