This service provides comprehensive treatment for pediatric and adult patients
with	end-stage	renal	disease	(ESRD)	and	end-stage	liver	disease	(ESLD).	In	
addition	to	performing	surgery	for	benign	and	malignant	tumors	of	the	liver,	
bile	ducts	and	pancreas,	surgeons	specialize	in	liver	transplantation,	intestinal	
(small	bowel)	transplantation,	kidney	transplantation,	pancreas	and	liver	
surgery,	laparoscopic	surgery,	combined	kidney	and	pancreas	transplantation,	
and vascular and peritoneal catheter access surgery for patients requiring either
hemodialysis	or	continuous	ambulatory	peritoneal	dialysis	(CAPD).	The	Institute	
of Transplantation is one of only a handful of programs in the United States that
perform	small	bowel	transplants	and	the	only	such	program	in	the	mid-Atlantic	
region.	Primary	patient	care	for	all	patients	is	given	by	the	surgeons	along	with	a	
specially	trained	staff	that	includes	nurse	practitioners	and	coordinators.
