INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Gynaecology Ward. We want your experience to be
both enjoyable and an educationally enriching experience. You will
be allocated a Mentor and an Associate Mentor and will be given their
names when you phone to check your starting time or on your 1st day
on the ward.

Directions to the ward

The Gynaecology & Obstetrics Department is located in a separate
building, in front and to the left, of the main hospital. It is easily
accessed from the main entrance off Jeanfield Road.

                                WARD PHILOSOPHY

   Our patients will be regarded as individuals who have the right to make decisions regarding their
    care. Because of the sensitive nature of the work undertaken in this ward each patient has the
    right for dignity and privacy and we, as a team, will strive to achieve this at all times.

   Each patient has the right to the highest quality of care that we can give

   We will as individual nurses / midwives will ensure that we will give our best at all times

   Each patient and their relatives have the right to ask questions about their care and to clarify any
    situations with their staff. If you should have any questions or queries, please ask us. Should you
    wish to complain or express concerns about your treatment please speak to the nurse in charge.

   Our approach to patient care is based on the individual and their needs by using an individual
    approach to our care planning we ensure that patient’s rights are met. Dignity, privacy and quality
    care are we believe basic rights.

   We strive to deliver a high standard of nursing care by continuing to expand and develop our
    practice both individually and as a team. Our patients are of paramount importance to us.

                         INFORMATION

There are a variety of ways to get to the hospital, use
www.travelinescotland.com to help plan your journey to us. Please let
the staff know as soon as possible if you have specific problems
travelling to PRI and we will endeavour to help you overcome them as
much as we are able.

Car parking is free with limited places, there is on-street parking but
this is at your own risk and please be sensitive and courteous to the
needs of the residents around the hospital.

Canteen facilities – 7am-4pm, situated in the old building.
                      WRVS café in the main entrance area.
Generally speaking students usually bring a packed lunch/tea. There
are microwave and coffee making facilities.
Changing facilities – male: situated in the theatre area on level1.
                      Female: lockers & shower facilities are provided
in the changing area located on the ground floor of the building.

The Gynaecology Ward

Facilities include:
 4, 4 bedded rooms and 3 single rooms.
 An examination room where Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinics
  are run Mon-Fri 10am-3pm. (EPAC)
 An emergency Out Patient Service
 Theatre is located along the corridor on the same level.
 There is an Ultrasound department located on the lower level.

Within this department the services we offer are:

Genito Urinary Pelvic Medicine
Major Surgery and Day Case Surgery
Breast/General Surgery
EPAC
Emergency Out Patient Service e.g. Blood tests, Morning after pill

You the student will be able to follow the patient‟s journey by
admitting them, observing their operation in Gynaecology theatre
then caring for them post-operatively.

Women’s Clinics

Within this setting there are many different learning opportunities.
The clinics that are run throughout the week are:

Urodynamics
Lletz Clinic (Large loop excision of the transformational zone)
Colposcopy
Infertility
General Gynaecology
Uro Gynaecology
Termination of Pregnancy

Your mentor will encourage you to attend some of these clinics as it
can be of educational benefit for you.


Shift Times

We are a Monday through to Friday ward. The 2 shifts you would be
expected to work are:
7.30am – 3.30pm and 2pm – 10pm

Night shift is not expected of you as the majority of learning
opportunities are to be found throughout the day.


The Gynaecology Team

The Gynaecology team consists of Senior Charge Nurse, Midwives,
Registered Nurses, Health Care Assistants and a Ward Clerk.

The consultants and specialist registrar are as follows

Dr Phillips (General Gynae & laparoscopic/Laser surgery),
Dr Gordon (General Gynae and Obstetrics),
Dr Allen (Uro Gynae)
Dr Kay (Infertility)
Dr El-Miligy (General Gynae & Obstetrics) He is our Specialist
Registrar.



There are 2 surgical consultants Mr Lee and Mr Elseedawy who have
theatre lists Tues, Wed & Thurs afternoons

Physiotherapists work on a part-time basis in the ward
throughout the week

Breast care nurses are available when required.

Operating times on the ward generally are:

Dr Phillips Mon am and Thurs am
Dr Gordon Mon pm and Wed am
Dr Allen Tues am and Fri am
Dr Kay every 4th Wednesday.




Overview of the ward

Gynaecology Ward patients comprise of „waiting list admissions‟ and
„emergency admissions‟. All waiting list admissions will have begun
their journey by first being clinically reviewed by a Gynaecology
Consultant in the Out Patient Department after an appropriate
referral by the GP. The initial consultation will reveal if the findings
are significant; if so, they will be added to a waiting list prior to
being selected for admission for surgery. Most patients who will be
attending for operations are not “ill” in the true sense of the word
and with appropriate treatment, they will hopefully return to an
independent, functioning lifestyle and to a better quality of life.
Emergency admissions are usually sent in via a referral from their
own GP to the doctor on call that day. Emergency admissions are
only accepted before 4pm, outwith these hours they are referred to
Ninewells Hospital.



Assessment and the CAP Booklet

Your CAP Booklet is your responsibility, but we ask that it be made
readily available for your mentor and/or staff to review when
required. There are great many opportunities for you to gain the
experience and practical skills towards completing the required
competencies for this placement. As a student nurse you will be

     guided in many areas, but you will also be expected to show
     enthusiasm, initiative and interest.
        We expect to be asked questions and will endeavour to answer
     them appropriately. However, as an adult learner, we may nudge you
     in the right direction and get you to discover the answers for
     yourself.
     You will be allocated a mentor and an associate/team mentor.
     Throughout your time with us they will provide ongoing constructive
     feedback as to your progress. It will also be their responsibility to
     carry out your midway and final assessments. This will involve their
     liasing with all members of the team whom you have come into
     contact with.

1.      COMMUNICATION:
     Patients/clients/relatives/significant others, nursing staff/care
     team, multi-disciplinary team, verbal/non-verbal, therapeutic
     information, telephone and written.



2.      HEALTH PROMOTION
     Health promotion re lifestyle, health education, multi-disciplinary
     team, cultural sensitivity, developing health promotion practice.

3.      NURSING ASSESSMENT: -
     Utilising systematic approach, assessment tools (possibly identify
     specific    tools),  observing,   recording    and    reporting    re
     patients/clients, selection and utilisation of individualised patient
     tools, modifying said tools as required, prioritising workload,
     delegation, time management, accurate documentation, admission and
     discharge.



4.      ESSENTIAL CARE IN VARIETY OF SETTINGS: -
     Patient/client comfort, hygiene, toileting etc., participate as member
     (full) of multidisciplinary team, collaborative care with
     patient/family, formulating realistic goals (long & short term), moving
     & handling, care re surgical intervention, therapeutic interventions,
     medication (knowledge and administration),



5.      SAFETY: -
     Recognise and deal/cope with emergency situations, recognise
     personal limitations, environmental risk strategies, patient/client risk
     assessments, infection control issues, de-escalation skills, safe
     administration therapeutic interventions.



     Your Placement
     During your time in the clinical area you should expect:
      A named Mentor (and in some areas Associate or Team Mentor).

      Initial discussion regarding your learning needs, outcomes and

       competencies.
      Regular and constructive feedback on your performance including

       Mid-way & Final Assessment.
      A supportive learning environment.

      Provision of learning opportunities including clinical skills and

       visiting related areas.
     Remember to bring your CAP Booklet with you.

Aims during Placement

During your time within Gynaecology…you, the student, will (further)
develop both clinical and managerial skills, both personal and
professional. You will research relevant theory and utilise and/or
explain how it can be used to enhance nursing practice, and improve
patient care.


Objectives

A Learning Contract will be employed to document agreed objectives
with a view to the student achieving the competencies required from
the placement.


Outcomes
   At the end of the placement the student will have met the
    required competencies.
   The student will have demonstrated that they can effectively
    manage their time and prioritise their workload.
   The student will have had the opportunity to plan and assess care
    with their Mentor and other members of the team.
   The student will reflect on the care that they have provided
    during their placement.
   The student will have liaised and worked (if applicable) with other
    members of the multidisciplinary team.
   The student will have a clear understanding of the issues relevant
    to this area re what and how care is provided.

Practice Education Facilitators

There are 9 Practice Education Facilitators (PEFs) across NHS
Tayside, with responsibilities for all NHS clinical placements. Your
local PEF is Anne Mathewson.
Their role includes supporting the Mentor, facilitating communication
and improving links between the clinical areas and the Universities
and Colleges. They also aim to ensure that the students‟ experience
in the clinical placement is of the highest quality and greatest
benefit. The PEFs can be contacted about issues regarding the
clinical placement, however we suggest you follow protocol as per
your student handbook.
