                                                                     The Tuvalu Ship Registry is in its third year of operations after opening
                                                                     its doors to foreign ownership through the adoption of the Open Ship
                                                                     Registry Bill in 2004. Since then, Tuvalu has grown from strength to
                                                                     strength gaining quality tonnage from reputable ship owners, and as
                                                                     such, our goals for the future will be focused on serving the needs of
                                                                     our ship owners at any time and any place.

                     brief summary                                                                        The Government of Tuvalu has appointed the Tuvalu Ship Registry as the Authority to issue all
                                                                                                          certificates necessary for a vessel to sail and trade under the Tuvalu flag. Its responsibilities include:

     The amendments to the Tuvalu Merchant Shipping
     Act 1987, for the registration of foreign vessels,
     came into force in 2004. This enabled the
     establishment of the Tuvalu Ship Registry to
     administer the registration of ships, regulate
     matters relating to merchant shipping and
     seafarers,  and    administer    policy  for  the
     development of shipping in general.

     The     amendments        specifically  incorporate
     provisions relating to ownership requirements,
     mortgages and registration which allow for the
     commercial operation of an international ship
