EVENT ALERT!

MyPlace_MyFace Photo Competition and Exhibition
Lord Mayor Clover Moore will officially launch the exhibition on Tuesday
17 August, 6:30pm at Pine Street Gallery. Exhibition dates: 17 – 28 August
2010. This community photo competition asked people to take a photo of
themselves, their friends, family or pet, in a place that means something to
them. Entries were encouraged from people experiencing homelessness as
well as people with a secure place to live. For more information go to:

Pine Street & Hope Street - Joint Outreach Exhibition
Official Launch: Thursday 2 September, 3:00pm at Carriageworks.
Exhibition dates: 2 September – 18 September 2010. Hope Street Urban
Compassion and Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, in association with
Carriageworks, present a joint exhibition of 2D & 3D artworks created in their
2010 outreach programs.

Pine Street's Annual Student's Exhibition
Official Launch: Friday 24 September, 6:30pm at Pine Street Gallery.
Exhibition dates: 24 September – 2 October 2010. Come and help us
celebrate the creative talents of the students who are part of the Pine Street
community. Our 2010 exhibition will be featured in the City of Sydney's Art &
About Festival!

Short Courses

Introduction to Porcelain Ware
GROUND FLOOR PINE STREET STUDIO
1 x Saturday: 4 Sep

Tutor: Vanessa Owens
You will learn to make small porcelain objects, wheel thrown or hand built.
Then use decorative techniques including inlay, sgraffito, painting and carving
before your work is fired, to create a beautiful, translucent ceramic work of art.
Some experience with ceramics is preferred. Class size: 10

Raku Firing Workshop
GROUND FLOOR PINE STREET STUDIO

NB: Only students enrolled in a Term 3 ceramics class are eligible to enrol in
this course. Only $25 in addition to the 9 week course fee!
Fire! Colour! Revelation! Ever wondered what happens inside a kiln? This is a
hands-on workshop where students can explore the wonderful world of Raku.
This is a traditional Japanese glazing process where an outdoor kiln is used to
dramatic effect, to show how heat and smoke can transform an object in often
unpredictable ways! Work created in class is glazed and fired on this fun
evening at the conclusion of your 9-week ceramics course. Class size: 7

Printmaking with Solarplate

Explore the versatile and safe way to make prints using solarplate – sunlight

Basic Photography and Photoshop

A simple guide to using your camera and Photoshop to produce better
images. Eliminate common errors, and learn about basics of light and
composition for portraits or landscapes. This course shows how modern
photography and Photoshop developed from traditional chemical-based photo
and print processes. We will cover some photographic theory as well as a
wide variety of simple techniques to help you expand your creative choices. A
working knowledge of Microsoft or Mac operating systems is a minimal
requirement. Class size: 10

Painting, Drawing and Stencilling

Stencil Art

Learn about different stencil materials, selecting and designing images and
making art from coin size to gigantic. Learn how to convert your photos or

Painting in Watercolours

For beginners or those with a little previous experience, this introduction to
painting with watercolours will explore the various techniques used in applying
watercolour paint on prepared surfaces. Subjects of landscape, life, still life

drawing upon your personal experiences or interpretations of the world

Drawing and Painting: A Taste of Colour and Texture

A wonderful introduction to a mix of mediums and techniques to get you
started in painting and drawing. A great course for beginners, but also a
fantastic opportunity for more experienced students to brush up on their
formal skills. Gain an understanding of how to create perspective, and reflect
on your use of colours, mixing and mediums to create works. Take a creative
journey through a range of mediums including pencil, ink, charcoal and paint
to make and develop drawings and paintings – still life compositions will be

Conceptual Painting: Journeys to Me

Throughout our lives, we go on many journeys – sometimes through
countries, but also following people and events. Join this beginners to
intermediate painting class and learn more about rich painting finishes, and
use of light, warmth and dark to create depth and emotion. Learn to work with
a theme – to explore your life through the people, events or places that mean
so much to you. The program will include painting on canvases, art papers,
using mixed media and 3D objects such as those that represent journeys to
you as an artist – for example, the inside and outside surfaces of a suitcase!
Or your subject could be a place or a special person you hold dear, which can
be represented simply on canvas. Class size: 10

Using wheel throwing and hand building techniques, students can investigate
their own directions and create both functional and decorative objects. This
course caters to all forms of clay modelling including pottery, hand building
and mixed media. Students start with pottery/wheel forming techniques and
progress at their own rate. Class size: 10

All Levels

A program for beginners and ongoing students. The course content will
include hand building and throwing techniques and how to choose and apply
appropriate slips, glazes and other surface treatments to achieve the best
results. Focus will be placed on fostering the creativity and technique of each
student, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Class size: 10

Intermediate and Advanced

This course aims to build on prior ceramics skills and knowledge and is a
great opportunity to refine and develop your own skills and style. Advanced
throwing and turning techniques are taught with an increased emphasis
placed on good design and personal style. Hand builders are welcome.
Important prerequisite: Some wheel experience necessary (i.e. students must
be able to centre clay on a wheel and pull up into a simple pot). Class size: 10

Printmaking

Students will follow a program of traditional and contemporary plate-making
and etching techniques. You will practise the use of a range of printmaking
tools, mediums, materials and machinery in a fully equipped printmaking
studio. Our classes are small, allowing our students to receive individual
assistance with their work. You will create a folio of work, studio results and
tests that you will be able to use for future printmaking. Class size: 6
Beginners to Intermediate

This course presents an opportunity for both novice and experienced
printmakers to develop skills and professional practice in the print workshop.
Novices will progress quickly through traditional practices initially, then
explore contemporary mediums including photopolymer plate making.
Experienced printmakers will be tutored and supported in the development of
their individual print portfolios, with ‘editioning’ for exhibition purposes a
particular focus. Class size: 8

Intermediate

This program is for those students who want to take their printmaking skills
from beginners to a more advanced stage. The course will extend the
foundation skills and include methods and techniques such as etching, relief
block print, collagraph, drypoint and photopolymer. Safer printmaking
practices will be taught for making intaglio and relief work, ready for fine art
printing. Some printmaking experience is required. Class size: 6

Accessing a fully equipped printmaking studio, you will learn the techniques of
relief and intaglio printmaking. Etch and engrave your own metal plates and
experience the benefits of non–toxic processes. This class is designed for
students who regard the printmaking process as a supportive element to the
creative process. Having understood the principles and mastered some basic
techniques, you can adapt a chosen method to suit your style of work. Class

This course will include techniques such as roller printing, riveting, sweat
soldering, metal inlay and forming. Projects will include a ring band, pendant
or earrings. Depending on your skill level, we will choose two of these
techniques to focus on. Bring your own jewellery or images you admire.
Prerequisite: Completion of the Silver Jewellery Fundamentals course or
presentation to the tutor of works you have made previously (photos can be
sent via email prior to booking). Class size: 7

Intermediate/Advanced

Using more advanced techniques such as basic stone setting, box ring, wax
and cuttlefish casting, etching, chain making and reticulation, you can
continue to work on your favourite process or choose one or two different
techniques and incorporate them in your new projects. Prerequisite:
Completion of the Fundamentals and Beginners to Intermediate courses, or
presentation of works you have made previously (photos can be sent via

Digital Design Studio

A great course for young people interested in using Adobe CS4 Photoshop
and InDesign for media graphics and publications for print or web. The tutor
will show you all of those great tricks and shortcuts to create professional,
quality presentations. Students are welcome to design or work on their own
personal projects or with the tutor on class projects. Topics will include using
fonts, creating designs and graphics, and document layouts. We will also look
at preparing and retouching photos, making art ready for print or web and
creating PDF files. Your experienced tutor will provide advice on planning the
project from start to finish. Students are advised to bring some digital images
and text files on a CD or USB stick for projects in class. Class size: 10

Bunkwaa’s Digital Animation Workshop

Do you have an animated short film you want to make? Or even a character
you’d like to bring to animated life? Bunkwaa is an animation wizard who will
show you the animation process from script to screen. Explore traditional
animation techniques and learn about digital production. You will create your
short animated film using programs such as Photoshop, Flash and After
Effects. Learn everything from storyboarding, animating motion, special
effects and editing. You will need to bring a sketch or drawing to work from on
the first lesson. Class size: 7

GOCCO Print Workshop

This course offers an exciting introduction to Gocco print – a cheap and easy
way of producing photo silkscreens for use on paper or fabric. Derived from
the Japanese word gokko, loosely translated as make-believe play, the Gocco
is a self contained compact colour printing system invented in 1977. Do you
have an image, design or words you’ve been longing to get into print? This is
your chance to create an edition of A5 – A4 multi coloured postcards, CD
covers or art prints. You can also use the Gocco to print onto fabric! This is
the perfect course for anyone interested in taking their designs beyond the
photocopier, or for those wishing to make high quality, photo silk screen prints
onto fabric. You will need an A5 photocopy (or smaller) design or artwork
ready for the first class. Class size: 7

Creative Pros: Professional Practice for Young Artists

Are you an emerging artist, graduate or art student? Do you want to put
together an exhibition but don’t know where to start? Then this ongoing
course is for you! Each week an experienced artist will work with you to learn
about professional practice for visual artists. You will learn about different
types of galleries, art spaces, collectives and how to approach them. Discuss
marketing for artists, web based promotion, approaching the media and how
to get your work noticed. You will learn about how to put together a portfolio,
write an artists statement and documenting your work. We will also cover
important tips about hanging, preparing work for exhibitions and professional
presentation of your own work. Each week an experienced practising artist will
give you valuable tips and work with you to create a marketing plan and
develop strategies for breaking into the industry. Please bring a USB thumb-
drive with images of your work for the first lesson. Class size: 8

Ready, Steady, Craft!

Join us in the Pine Street Gallery for a relaxed evening of art and craft. Like
the old fashioned knitting circles of yesterday, we will work together as a
group. You can bring your art and craft projects to work on and discuss.
You will have access to craft materials, photocopying and kitchen facilities. A
great night to get busy with crafts such as jewellery, felting, knitting, needle
work, crochet and zine making. An experienced art tutor will be on hand to
help you with your projects if needed. Ready, Steady, Craft is a great way to
test out new products or creations and get feedback from other creative young
people. A FREE evening filled with needle and paper crafts with a little tea,
bikkies and a good old chat! Class size 10 (bookings essential)

Discovery of Clay

Join us in our calm, specialised studio and discover the magical art of
ceramics. Experiment with hand-building techniques using moulds, slabs,
coils and attachments. Learn to decorate using colourful, non toxic underglaze
and experiment with design work using relief carving and sgraffito. With gentle
instruction from a qualified tutor, you will complete small studies and a larger
scale major work. Older students have the opportunity to progress to our
advanced ceramics program for young teens. Class size: 10
A 3D Adventure!

With instruction from a qualified tutor you will explore a range of sculpture
techniques and materials. You will build a beautiful shape with armature wire,
make a cane frame and then weave or paper mache it. The tutor will help
ensure your sculpture is structurally sound, while you express your wildest
ideas. Make sculpture from stuff you would never have imagined possible,
and come on an amazing 3D adventure with us! Class Size: 10

Painting and Drawing

Focus your creative talents and explore different 2D media such as charcoal,
ink, pencil and acrylic paint. Work on canvas and quality artist paper, using
exercises such as still life, portrait, landscape and abstract studies. You will
gain an understanding of formal concepts such as composition, colour theory
and visual perspective, while you develop practical skills such as brush
control and the care of your tools and materials. We will look at new and
traditional styles to help you gain confidence and experiment with your
creative imagination. Older students have the opportunity to progress to our

underglaze; and create graphic images using print-making techniques. This
program is two-streamed, allowing students to consider formal and
experimental concepts as part of age-appropriate activities. Class size: 10

Stop–Pro, and create pictures with depth using the drawing tablet. A new and

The Animation Show

Learn how to bring your illustrations to life using the latest in Photoshop
software. This program covers all you need to know about digital illustration.
You will learn advanced skills in imaging, digital drawing, 3D modelling,

Digital and Traditional Animation

Use traditional animation techniques to produce finished digital movies. From
pencil sketched drawings to digital animation, this class will teach you a
variety of foundation animation process including weight and balance, timing,
acting and lip-sync, as you make cartoon characters walk and talk. Learn how
to enhance your pencilled animations digitally in Photoshop. Class size: 10

Digital Stencil Art

Take ceramics a step further and see what you can really do! This class is
designed for young teens who wish to further their skills in hand building and
on the pottery wheel. You will explore various construction techniques and
decorative treatments in a dedicated ceramics studio with professional
instruction. Beginners are always welcome as activities can be adjusted
according to skill level. Class size: 10

MAKE UP CLASSES.

Payments, Bookings And Refund Policy

Payments: Payment for courses must be received a minimum of one week
before the class starting. If full fee not paid at least a week before class
starting – booking will be cancelled and offered to someone on the wait list.
Bookings: Only fully paid-up and booked students will be allowed into the
studios.
Refunds: The Centre makes every effort to ensure advertised courses run.
However the Centre reserves the right to alter the program either before or
during the course and to cancel any program if insufficient enrolments are
received. If the Centre cancels a course, you will be offered an alternative
course or a refund if your payment has been processed. Once classes have
started, missed classes are the student's responsibility and not eligible for a
refund.
Make-Up Classes: It is the student's responsibility if they miss a class. We
cannot accommodate an extra person in a class that they have not booked
into.

Studio Safety
Pine Street Creative Arts Centre prides itself in its pursuit of ‘work safe’
practices and its presentation of user and environmentally friendly alternatives
of mediums, without compromising quality and relevance. IMPORTANT: It is
an OHandS requirement that students attending all courses at Pine Street
must wear closed-toed shoes at all times. Students arriving with open-toed

Youth 8 weekday courses: $150 (+ $30 materials fee)

Children’s weekday 8 week courses: $150 per child or $180 per family (+ $30
per child materials fee)
Children’s Saturday 8 week courses: $170 per child or $195 per family (+ $30

Children’s weekday 4 week courses: $80 per child or $130 per family (+ $30
per child materials fee).
Gallery Hire: Pine Street Community Gallery is available for hire to individual
artists, groups and organisations. Cost for two week hire is $280
(individual/NFP organisations) or $580 (groups/for profit organisations). If hirer
wishes the gallery to be open on Saturday, there is an additional staffing cost
of $40 per hour.

Concessions
City of Sydney residents who have a current benefit card are eligible to apply
for concession. Proof of benefit must be provided when booking.

Accessibility
The office and gallery are on the first floor up a steep set of stairs. The
ceramics, painting and drawing, stencil and digital classes are all in
wheelchair accessible studios with wheelchair accessible toilets. Our other
studios have limited accessibility. Where possible our studios have a flexible
set up to help accommodate accessibility. Please contact us to discuss how
we can make sure you can attend the courses that interest you.

Transport
By Bus: From CBD take any bus via Parramatta Road, alight at Buckland
Street on Broadway. Walk down Buckland Street. Cross the park at the end
onto Pine Street. The centre is located a few buildings down on the left. For
buses to the CBD along City Road via Newtown, alight at Victoria Park and
walk two blocks down Cleveland Street to Pine Street. The 352 bus goes
along Cleveland Street, stopping near Pine Street (Note: does not run on
weekends).
By Train: 10 minute walk from either Central or Redfern Stations.
By Car: Parking is limited at Pine Street. However, there are some unlimited
all day parking spots in Beaumont Street, off Cleveland Street, as well as
plenty of one–hour parking.

Darlington Activity Centre
The Centre is a five-minute walk from Pine Street located on the corner of Ivy
and Shepherd Streets, Darlington (behind the Seymour Centre).
