                          EARLY HEAD START
              PASSENGER DRIVER – CHILD CARE ASSISTANT


NATURE OF WORK

      This is routine work in the operation of a school bus for the
purpose of transporting Early Head Start children, staff and families.
      An employee in a position allocated to this class is responsible
for pick up and drop off of Early Head Start children in a safe and
orderly manner; transporting staff and children to various field trips
and other related activities and the transporting of families to
required service locations as needed.         Work involves performing
developmentally appropriate activities related to the social, physical,
intellectual and emotional development of children. Work is performed
within established rules and procedures with supervision received from a
superior in the form of specific assignments or schedules and reviewed
on a daily basis. An employee in this position is directly supervised
by the Center Manager.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

      Operates a school bus to transport Head Start and Early Head Start
children, staff and families to field trips, related activities, pick up
and drop services and required family services locations.
      Follows an established route or schedule as assigned on a daily
basis.
      Maintains records and logs on travel time, mileage, gas usage and
Head Start children information.
      Pre-trip inspection prior to actual travel on school bus in use.
      Takes school bus in to be inspected and serviced monthly at the
central servicing are for preventative maintenance and/or repairs.
      Maintains cleanliness of interior of school bus and performs other
duties as required.
      Assists Child Development Assistants, Child Development Associate
I or II in providing development appropriate activities and the close
monitoring of children during daily center activities.
      Monitors small groups of children who are engaged in plan and
learning activities.
      Performs general housekeeping chores and assists children in
feeding.
      Assists the teacher in planning and implementing daily lesson
plans and in the management of children.
      Assists with the supervision of children on the playground and
provides opportunities for individual children.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

      Knowledge of State and County traffic and motor vehicle
regulations.
      Some knowledge of the geography of the County.
      Ability to operate a large school bus in a safe and prescribed
manner.
      Ability to identify unsafe driving conditions and take appropriate
actions during the transportation of others.
      Ability to utilize good judgment for roadside emergencies.
      Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
      Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
with other children, parents, employees and the general public.
      Knowledge of the conduct and behavior of infants and preschool
children.
      Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate
practices with infants and preschoolers.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

      Must be able to read and write English; experience in the
operation of a 65 passenger school bus for transporting passengers; or
any equivalent combination of related training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

      Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B
with passenger and air brake endorsements and school bus driver (S)
endorsement.    Must complete additional 40 hours of Department of
Children and Families Child Care Certification within 120 days of
employment.   Must obtain certification in CPR within 60 days of hire.
Must obtain the National CDA certification within one year of
employment.
