Sample Confirmation Letter to Speaker April 28, 1998 Ms. Judy Knight Frank, Chairman Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe P.O. Box 52 Towaoc, Colorado 81344 Dear Chairman Frank: Many thanks for agreeing to meet with my environmental economics class during our field trip/case study on Animas-La Plata. We will meet you at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 in Towaoc. There will be 21 students in our group – mostly juniors and seniors in majors fairly evenly distributed amongst economics, political science and environmental science. I have attached the field trip schedule so that you can see how your presentation fits into the overall scope of the case study. Specifically, I would like you to address the following issues in your talk: overview of the Ute Mountain Ute’s interests in the Animas-La Plata Project; why you feel that the Reconciliation Plan, “ALP Lite” best serves the interests of your tribe; your perspectives on other alternatives such as the Legacy Fund for Land and Water Acquisition and the CPA proposal; your perspectives on what will happen if Ute claims are not resolved by the deadline established under the 1988 Ute Indian Settlement Act.
Naturally, placing ALP and the Ute Mountain Ute’s Winters’ Doctrine claims in the broader context of the history of the Ute people would be very interesting and helpful. Please feel free to focus on the issues that are most important from your perspective. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at msmith@cc.colorado.edu or call me at (719) 389-6411. Many thanks for your time. I look forward to meeting you in Towaoc. We look forward to touring the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Farm and Ranch after our meeting with you. Yours sincerely, XXXX Associate Professor of Economics Attachment: Field Trip Schedule
