Introduction
Whether you work as a network manager in a large or small corporation or you are a home user; backing
up your data or secure your hard disk information is a very critical factor protecting you against data loss
or from cybercriminal attacks. Securing your data in today’s world is a must! One day you can be infected
with a virus or your hard drive can stop working or crush due to sudden & catastrophic failure, this could
be due to fire, earthquake, floods etc. That’s when you will thank yourself that your computer information
has been securely stored on a backup. For business, off-site is very critical for disaster recovery and
business continuity.

Perhaps the number one reason why people neglect to back up their desktops and servers is the lack of
workable solution. It can be difficult to find a method configurable enough to suite everyone's needs. One
promising answer may be RESTORE backup solution.

RESTORE is a complete enterprise network backup and recovery solution. It is scalable to a complete
backup solution for multiple workstations, servers and data centers. It operates over local area networks,
wide area networks, and the Internet. It’s an application for enterprise and data center backup for
Windows, Mac OS X, and Unix/Linux systems. It is GPLv2-licensed and freely available to download as a
set of Debian/Ubuntu packages, virtual machine, or 455MB installable LiveCD.

Why Backup? In information technology, a backup or the process of backing up refers to making copies
of data so that these additional copies may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. Backups
are useful primarily for two purposes. The first is to restore a state following a disaster (also known as:
disaster recovery). The second is to restore small numbers of files after they have been accidentally
deleted or corrupted. Data loss is also very common. 66% of internet users have suffered from serious
data loss running into million of dollars every year.

Since a backup system contains at least one copy of all data worth saving, the data storage requirements
are considerable. Organizing this storage space and managing the backup process is a complicated
undertaking. A data repository model can be used to provide structure to the storage. In the modern era of
computing there are many different types of data storage devices that are useful for making backups.
There are also many different ways in which these devices can be arranged to provide geographic
redundancy (availability), data security (or integrity), accessibility and portability.

Before data is sent to its storage location, it is selected, extracted, and manipulated. Many different
techniques have been developed to optimize the backup procedure. These include optimizations for

dealing with open files and live data sources as well as compression, encryption, and de-duplication,
among others. Many organizations and individuals try to have confidence that the process is working as
expected and work to define measurements and validation techniques. It is also important to recognize
the limitations and human factors involved in any backup scheme. There also many data backup
strategies, e.g., unstructured, Full backup, Full plus incremental backup, Differential backup and Reverse
delta backup.

Solution
In this Hands-on Lab session, you’ll learn how to setup virtual network on VMware (you may also use any
other virtual machines like MS VirtualPC, Linux Xen, or VirtualBox from Sun). In this Hands-Lab session,
you’ll learn how to download installable LiveCD that boots a complete operating system featuring the
Restore backup utility. The OS is based on Ubuntu (7.10 gutsy) and uses the Xfce desktop. Next, I’ll
show you how to install it to your local hard drive using Ubuntu's familiar installer. You’ll also some simple
administrative tax like managing users, managing backup etc. Upon completion of this labs session, you
should have gained a capability and expertise to enable install and manage your own backup data center.

Part 1: Install & Configure RESTORE Backup Server

Step 1: Bootup RESTORE Backup Server using LiveCD
1. Hit the Enter key to start “Install or Install RESTORE”

                                                                                               Fig. 1

2. From Fig. 2, wait for the system to complete initial install process
