Dear Lee:

Congratulations! On behalf of the officers and members of the Tennessee Omega
Chapter, I am happy to inform you that your high academic standing allows us to
consider you for membership in Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society.

Tau Beta Pi was founded in 1885 to recognize outstanding students who display
both distinguished scholarship in technical fields and exemplary character. Tau Beta Pi is
highly regarded within industry and academe, and has grown to include 221 collegiate
chapters and has initiated more than 445,000 members.

I have enclosed (a) brochure(s) which introduce(s) you to Tau Beta Pi’s mission,
some of its distinguished members, programs, and the many benefits of being a Tau Bate.
As examples, the Association offers more than 100 scholarships of $2,000 for its senior-
year members, and the Engineering Futures Program provides trained instructors to teach
interpersonal and leadership development skills to 2,000 students annually. Tau Beta Pi
also offers opportunities for personal development by providing a means by which you
can assume roles of leadership in the college and provide distinctive service.

The members of theTennessee Omega Chapter are proud of their active
participation within the college and the local community. They are individuals who not
only strive for success in academics, but who also wish to improve the world they live in,
while at the same time having fun! Service and social activities include sponsorship of
the Dance Marathon and Engineers Day, Habitat for Humanity, tutoring, and teaching
elementary students about basic science/engineering principles. We hope that you will
take advantage of this opportunity to be recognized for your achievements and join our
chapter in making a difference in the community.

We would like to get to know you and provide more information to you about Tau
Beta Pi. Please join us and other eligible candidates at an orientation meeting on October
19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Engineering Building Student Lounge, Room 105. In the
meantime, please visit the Tau Beta Pi website at www.tbp.org to learn more about this
distinguished organization.

If you have any questions about Tau Beta Pi, or will not be able to attend the
meeting, please call me at 553-4567 or email me at jsmith@utk.edu. I look forward to
meeting you and having you become a part of our Association.

                                     Sincerely,

                                     John Smith
