COSM 1426 Nail Technology Basics                                                         153 hours

In this course, students will learn about the history of nail technology how to best communicate
with their clients, basic anatomy, how to understand and prevent infections, and skin and nail
growth and its diseases and disorders.
Students will also learn basics of chemistry and electricity, services such as manicuring,
pedicuring, wraps, acrylic nail enhancements, UV gels and business skills.
Competencies:

   •   Describe the origins of appearance enhancement.
   •   List the principles that contribute to personal and professional success.
   •   Demonstrate an understanding of ergonomics principle ergonomically correct postures
       and movements.
   •   Conduct a successful client consultation.
   •   Describe how to safely clean and disinfect saloon tools and equipment.
   •   Explain the importance of anatomy and physiology to the cosmetology profession.
   •   Define important terms relating to skin disorders.
   •   Describe the structure and composition of nails.
   •   Recognize diseases of the nails that should not be treated in the salon.
   •   Discuss the difference between solutions, suspensions and emulsions.
   •   Describe the basic chemistry of all artificial nail enhancements.
   •   Define the nature of electricity and the two types of electric current.
   •   Perform a basic and conditioning oil manicure incorporating all safety, sanitation, and
       disinfection requirements.
   •   Demonstrate proper procedures and precautions for a pedicure.
   •   Demonstrate the proper procedures for applying no-light gels.
   •   Demonstrate the proper procedure for maintaining healthy acrylic nail enhancement.
   •   Demonstrate the proper procedures for maintaining UV gel services using forms over tips
       and on natural nails.
   •   List and describe the different types of salon business.
   •   List the most effective forms of salon advertising.
   •   List the most effective way to build a client base.

COSM 1327 Nail Technology Manicure                                                       5.25 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform basic manicures for customers, following industry
guidelines for safety and an understanding of basic nail shapes.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate the safe and correct handling of nail implements and tools.
   •   Perform a basic manicure incorporating all safety, sanitation, and disinfection
       requirements.
   •   Identify five basic nail shapes.
COSM 1318 Nail Technology Pedicure                                                    12.25 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform basic pedicures on customers, following industry
guidelines for safety and an understanding of the basic parts of good foot care and hygiene.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate the proper procedures and precautions for a pedicure.
   •   Demonstrate proper technique for filing and trimming the nails.
   •   Demonstrate proper cleaning and disinfecting of pedicure equipments.
COSM 1331 Nail Technology Polish Change                                                  2.5 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform polish changes on customers using correct
techniques and are able to keep the cuticles clear from polish, following industry guidelines for
safety.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate correct technique for the application of nail polish.
   •   Perform the basic nail polish applications.
COSM 1332 Nail Technology Sculpture Regular Acrylic                                   30.25 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform artificial nail enhancement using acrylic and are
able to demonstrate correct liquid and powder consistency, following industry guidelines for
safety.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate proper procedures for applying acrylic nail enhancements using forms, over
       tips and on natural nail
COSM 1417 Nail Technology Sculptured Odor Free                                          8.25 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform artificial nail enhancement using low odor or odor
free acrylic on forms and are able to demonstrate correct liquid and powder consistency,
following industry guidelines for safety, and preparing them for State Board.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate the application of odor less acrylic, and explain how if differs from
       traditional acrylic products.
COSM 1323 Nail Technology White Tip                                                      5.5 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform application of well less white tips and proper
application of either acrylic or wrap, and following industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate the proper application of well less white tip and acrylic/wraps.
COSM 1418 Nail Technology Blended Tips                                                       3 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform application of blended tips and proper application
of either acrylic and wrap, and following industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate the proper application of blended tip and acrylic/wraps.
COSM 1329 Nail Technology Regular Fills                                                     10 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform removal of 25% of old acrylic and reapplication of
new acrylic on new growth area, by following industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Perform regular rebalance procedures and repairs.
COSM 1419 Nail Technology Back Fills                                                        15 hours

In this hands-on course, students will remove 75% of old acrylic and reapplication of a new
French smile line as well as a new stress area in the apex to rebalance the artificial enhancement.
Competencies:

   •   Perform rebalance procedure using white acrylic on tip and makes an even smile line.
COSM 1337 Nail Technology Wraps Full Set                                                     4 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform application of silk or fiber glass fabric, resin glue,
accelerator, and following industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate the proper procedures and precautions used in fabric wrap application.
COSM 1333 Nail Technology Wraps – Fills                                                      3 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform application, resin glue, accelerator to new growth
area of the nail, and following industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate the maintenance of fabric wrap, including a 2-week and a 4-week rebalance.
COSM 1421 Nail Technology Soak Off with Manicure                                          1.25 hours
In this hands-on course, students soak of old acrylic properly followed by appropriate manicure
and following industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate the proper procedure for removal of acrylic nail enhancements followed by
       a manicure.
COSM 1422 Nail Technology Sanitary Credits                                              13.75 hours

In this hands-on course, students will perform proper sanitation to work area and implements.
Demonstrates proper infection control and follows industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Safely clean and disinfect salon tools, equipment and work area after each service.
COSM 1427 Nail Technology Front Desk /Laundry                                             10 hours

In this hands-on course students will help the receptionist and dispensary area with various
duties, and following industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Work with clients professionally as they arrive and leave from their services.
   •   Properly clean and store used towels.
COSM 1424 Nail Technology Practical Final Test                                               3 hours

In this hands-on course, students will demonstrate readiness for taking State Board and being
entry level competent for the nail industry, and following industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate preparedness and competency for the State Board final Practical exam.
   •   Use all of the required sanitation and safety precautions in services.
COSM 1319 Nail Technology Model Practical                                                 20 hours

In this hands-on course, the student will bring in models to demonstrate readiness to take
appointment in school salon, and following industry guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Demonstrate proficiency and readiness to take clients within the correct time frame.
COSM 1061 Nail Technology Special Projects A                                              30 hours

In this hands-on course the students gain additional practical salon experience following industry
guidelines for safety.
Competencies:

   •   Follow industry guidelines for safety.
   •   Demonstrate professionalism and quality service on clients.
COSM 1062 Nail Technology Special Projects B                                             60 hours

In this hands-on course the students gain additional practical salon experience following industry
guidelines for safety.
