moderation option:          A centrally established and directed national moderation
                            system has been set up by NZQA.

special notes:              Although a ritual may be devised by an individual or as part
                            of a collaborative process, the unit standard does not assess
                            this aspect.

Elements and Performance Criteria

element 1

Research the use of masks in different cultural contexts.

Range:      masks from two cultures.

performance criteria

1.1         Research establishes designs and materials used for the masks.

1.2         Research includes examples of symbolic representation by masks.

            Range:       three masks per culture

1.3         Research includes examples of uses of masks.

            Range:       three per culture;
                         may include but are not limited to examples of - ceremonials,
                         warfare, revelry.

1.4         Research includes examples of protocols associated with the use of one
            particular mask.


element 2

Create an original symbolic mask.

performance criteria

2.1         Mask design suits the symbolic representation of a selected universal theme.

            Range:       universal themes may include but are not limited to - love, war,
                         greed, fertility, wisdom.

2.2         Mask is constructed to meet the design plan.

            Range:       must include - consideration of the practical use of the mask.


element 3

Demonstrate use of mask through performance of a devised ritual.

performance criteria

3.1         Devised ritualistic representation is sustained throughout the event.

3.2         Demonstration evidences effective mask use in relation to the ritual.

3.3         Demonstration respects group ritual intentions.
