Letter to the Teacher Materials and Assessments The materials in the following pages have been created to teach EL Civics objective 33.7, Job Search Skills. Feel free to use some of your own materials, but be sure to practice thoroughly filling out the job applications and the interview questions that are included in the materials provided for each level, as these items will be assessed. Also, be sure to cover the essential interview/application vocabulary included in each level. It is essential vocabulary for the job applications and the interview assessments. You do not need to use all of the materials, depending on the level and ability of the students but, if you do use your own materials, keep in mind that at the end of the module, your students should be able to... 1. complete a job application. 2. demonstrate successful job interview skills. 3. identify job titles, responsibilities, and places of work. 4. identify different jobs, job duties, and wages associated with jobs. 5. name employment possibilities in the community. 6. identify personal strengths, weaknesses, skills and past work experience. They will demonstrate mastery of the above objectives by being assessed on the following tasks: Task 1 (Written)  Complete an authentic job application (We use an authentic application, but for assessment purposes, it will be filled out with information about another person, not themselves— it will look much like the Johnny Chen applications in the materials) (Neatness and spelling will be figured into the score). [Levels 5-8 fill out a full application] [Levels 1-4 fill out a partial application] Task 2 (Oral Interview with Assessor)  Have a Job Interview (Body language will be included in the scoring—good eye contact, no fidgeting, good posture) 1 Procedures 1. If you are interested in a unit with your class, contact Holly Stevens at hollyestevens@gmail.com .She will provide you with information regarding assessment dates and any other administrative procedures not mentioned in this letter. 2. Please provide Holly with the following information: your name (of course), class CRN, size, and level. 3. CASAS test students. They will need to take a pre or post CASAS test to qualify for pay points from the state. During the assessments, however, we will not exclude other participating students. 4. Teach the EL Civics Module in the binder. 5. Keep in contact with Holly. You will need to let her know when you will need an assessor and the assessment materials. Please contact her well in advance of the assessments. 6. Fill out a scantron for you students on the day of the assessments. These will be included in your test packet. Instructions will be provided in the packet also. 7. Read the instructions that are in the test packet carefully. The packets will arrive in your mailbox before the assessments take place. 8. Please do not use the assessments in the packets to prepare you students for the assessments. 9. We’d love to have any materials you have developed while teaching these units. We also welcome anecdotal information about how the students felt about the unit or utilized the unit after instruction. Thank you for participating!
