                        Application for Funding
The importance of family and community involvement in supporting a healthy school
environment has long been recognized by government agencies and health professionals. Both
the Kansas Coordinated School Health (KCSH) program and the Kansas School Wellness
Policy Model Guidelines emphasize the need to engage family and community members. Over
the last four years, as schools have developed and implemented their school wellness policies,
there have been an increasing number of school-sponsored health fairs and fitness-themed
family nights.

Several of these events have been highlighted as success stories by KCSH. As more schools
learn about these activities and begin to host similar events, Kansas Team Nutrition recognized
the need to ensure that the messages and information provided to the community are accurate,
consistent, and appropriately presented. Kansas Team Nutrition has developed a Family Fun,
Food and Fitness Event Guide designed for schools. This guide provides instructions for
planning and promoting a health-centered, family-friendly, school-sponsored event and includes
specific instructions detailing both nutrition and fitness activities.

Kansas Team Nutrition, in partnership with Kansas Families and Schools
Together, is looking for schools interested in using this guide to plan one or more
Family Fun, Food and Fitness events during the 2009-2010 school year and to
provide feedback on the guide’s format and usefulness.

Nineteen $500 mini-grants will be awarded during fall 2009 and nineteen more will be available
in spring 2010 to schools willing to use and evaluate this new resource. All Kansas schools
participating in one or more school meals programs will have the opportunity to apply for a mini-
grant to help financially support a Family Fun, Food, and Fitness event. Preference will be
given to schools that are willing to match the mini-grant funds and/or show initiative in sustaining
a Family Fun, Food, and Fitness event beyond a single event.
