August 15, 2007 Dear Toni As she promised Tamara and her family were waiting for us at the Osaka airport on Monday June 16. I’m so glad that you introduced us Toni and that I could come to visit such a kind generous and friendly family. Wow! I love their house; it’s totally different from any home that I’ve ever seen before and my favorite part of it is the garden! In the middle of the house and down one step a large rectangular courtyard lies open to the sun and air; the garden is in the courtyard. Rocks not plants and trees dominate the space, and clean white sand instead of grass covers the ground. I wonder who carefully rakes the sand every day leaving small rows of lines covering the ground. Tamara told me that the sand represents the ocean the lines are like waves, and the rocks stand for islands. Sitting in the garden I believe she is right for the garden is as peaceful as any deserted beach. My flight by the way will be arriving in Portland in ten short days; if you’re free would you please meet me at the airport? Sincerely yours Ramona
