C Exports of Canadian ICT goods and services decreased by 1.6% in 2008, totalling $30.4
billion. As total Canadian exports increased by 2.4% in 2008, the share of the ICT sector
in total of Canadian exports has decreased to 5.8% in 2008. This is the second
consecutive year that the ICT share of the total Canadian exports has decreased.
• The Canadian economy imported $49.8 billion of ICT goods and services in 2008, an
increase of 2.3% over 2007, compared to an increase of 5.9% in total Canadian goods
and services imports.
C The ICT trade deficit increased to $22.1 billion in 2008, up by 7.7% from 2007.
ICT Goods
C Goods accounted for 73% of total ICT exports and 89% of total ICT imports in 2008.
• Canadian exports of ICT goods declined by 2.0% in 2008 and totalled $22.1 billion. In
the same year, total Canadian exports of goods grew by 7.3% and, as a result, the share
of ICT goods in total exports fell to 4.6%. Nevertheless, since 2002, exports of ICT
goods have grown by at an average of 0.8% per year.
• ICT export performance in 2008 was strongly affected by a large drop of $1.7 billion in
exports of wired communications equipment. In fact, excluding wired communications
equipment, ICT exports grew by $1.2 billion or 7.1% in 2008. Some of the product
groups that increased the most in 2008 are: commercial and service industry machinery
(21.1%), electronic components (13.2%), and wireless communications equipment
(7.6%).
• While exports of ICT goods declined in 2008, Canadian imports of these same goods
increased by 2.6% to reach $44.2 billion. Imports of wired and wireless communications
equipment increased the most in 2008. Imports of wired equipment grew by 14.5%
while imports of wireless equipment increased by 11.0%.
• Instruments (20%) accounted for the largest proportion of exports of ICT goods in 2008,
while computer and peripheral equipment represented 29% of the imports that year.
C Canada’s trade deficit in ICT goods increased by 7.7% in 2008, totalling $22.1 billion.
Computer and peripheral equipment alone accounted for 41% of this trade deficit,
followed by audio/video equipment (24%) and electronic components (17%).
C Despite the drop in exports (-35%) and the increase in imports (14.5%) of wired
communications equipment in 2008, Canada was still running a trade surplus of $124
million in this product group. This is the only ICT product group that has continuously
posted a positive balance since 2002.

ICT Services
C ICT services exports decreased by 1.4% in 2008. Since 2002, international recepits from
ICT services have grown by 18.7%; at an average annual rate of 2.9% per year. On the
other hand, international payments for ICT services grew by 0.9% in 2008. Since 2002,
payments have increased by 12.4% or 2.0% on an annualized rate.
C In 2008, Canada was a net exporter of ICT services, with a trade surplus of some $2.7
billion. A breakdown of trade in ICT services that year indicates that Canada had a trade
surplus of $2.3 billion in software and computer services, a surplus of $198 million in
telecommunications services and a surplus of $235 million in information services. The
trade surplus in ICT services decreased by 3.3% from 2007 but has grown by close to
44% since 2002.
C Software and computer services represent the largest proportion of trade in Canadian
ICT services. They accounted for 72% of total ICT services exports and 66% of total ICT
services imports in 2008.
