"ACAD Creates New Annual Lecture The Ellen and Daryl"
NEWS RELEASE ACAD Creates New Annual Lecture: The Ellen and Daryl Fridhandler Lecture on Non-Western Visual Art Practice For immediate release Calgary, Alberta, October 25, 2006 – the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) is pleased to announce that Ellen and Daryl Fridhandler have chosen to make a generous gift to the college. To mark Mr. Fridhandler’s birthday, they have donated $25,000 to ACAD. This gift will be used to establish and fund the annual Ellen and Daryl Fridhandler Lecture on Non-Western Visual Art Practice at ACAD. The fund is dedicated to the support of the annual lecture as part of the Institute for the Creative Process. ACAD has set a goal ‘to position the institution as an important contributor to cultural development in the community and society, and to craft a role for the institution as a catalyst for creative development within regional, provincial, national and international communities’. “The Fridhandler donation will enhance the college’s ability to bring accomplished visiting artists to speak to our students, faculty, staff as well as our external community and discuss visual arts traditions and practices from non-Western contexts,” stated Lance Carlson, President + CEO of ACAD. “The existence of this fund will immensely complement our other new funds for visiting artists and scholars at ACAD. The focus of the lectures will also reinforce and bring us closer to our existing college goal of diversity and inclusiveness in our community practices.” An annual recommendation for a lecturer will be made by the ACAD Visiting Artist Committee in consultation with the Vice President of Research + Academic Affairs to the President for approval. The annual lecture will be open to all students, faculty, staff and members of the general public. The lecture will occur once in an academic year over a minimum of 5 years. Daryl Fridhandler is a Calgary lawyer, a member of the ACAD Board of Governors and a long-time advocate for equity and equality.
