Sample letter to MP, PM, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance:
I am writing to ask you to please stop the sale of Strathmore, the Canadian Ambassador’s
residence in Ireland. This residence has served as Canada’s diplomatic post in Ireland for
50 years and has helped establish many of the businesses and partnerships that we enjoy
today between Canada and Ireland.
In this time of a $13.8B surplus, the government should be finding ways to renew and
restore the prestige and honour to this property and provide the resources needed to
provide proper diplomatic services Canada deserves as a G8 country.
Today Canada and Ireland enjoy strong relations in commerce, trade, tourism and culture.
We can continue to build on these relationships to create even greater wealth between our
two countries through the use of such heritage institutions as Strathmore. To downsize
this property and purchase something of lesser value to represent Canada in Ireland is a
travesty and sends a very negative message to the people of Ireland and Canada, and
indeed to the rest of the world. I implore you to stop this unnecessary sale and ask you to
provide proper resources for our Ambassador to conduct his diplomatic duties in a
manner expectant of a representative of a world leader.
Please use some of our surplus to restore Strathmore’s beauty and prominence as a
property and a presence in Ireland that Canada is proud to own and operate on behalf of
the citizens and government of Canada in Ireland
