EMS Team hat do chocolate pudding, water balloons and hamburgers all have in common? They were all part of this year’s Employee Appreciation Day. The Employee Morale and Services (EMS) Team worked hard again this year to pull everything together for the Employee Appreciation Day and the Theme Basket Raffle and were very successful, judging by all the positive feed back they received. Employee Appreciation Day (May 17) included a lunch with hotdogs, hamburgers, baked beans, chips and drink for every employee on all three shifts as well as a variety of activities during the daytime hours. Activities included a pie throwing event, horseshoe tournament, sack race, egg run, cake walk, water balloon toss, three-legged race, door prize drawings and theme basket raffle (see page 6 for theme basket and door prize winners). The pie throwing event boasted a great line up of participants, willing to don a pair of goggles, shower cap, and trash bag and put themselves in the path of plated chocolate pudding and whipped cream to raise money for the GRH-S foundation. Special thanks are extended to all the participants for volunteering to smell like chocolate the rest of the day. A huge thanks is extended to the EMS Team for another great Employee Appreciation Day, and all the hard work it took to put it together. Special thanks are extended to Bonnie Watson for taking the lead and working so hard to make this event a huge success. Thanks are also extended to Maintinence for going above and beyond in assisting in setting up and taking down, Food Service for cooking hot dogs, hamburgers, and taking care of the fixings, as well as countless other things, and Steve Thornton for the time and effort to make baked beans for the meal, making it extra special. The EMS Team hopes to continue the Employee Appreciation Day tradition with your support and ideas. If you have any suggestions or comments please submit them to Bonnie Watson (RHA’s office), chairperson of the EMS Team. If you are interested in helping with other events or becoming a member please contact Bonnie Watson also via email or ext. 2045. W 2 June 15, 2006 NEWS The Reporter EDITORIAL Two surveyors from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services were here from Monday morning (May 22-24) through this morning to conduct an unannounced full Medicare recertification survey. We were found to be in full compliance with the Conditions of Participation for Medicare. During the exit conference, the surveyors said that they were very impressed by the quality and dedication of the patient care staff at all levels, from the doctors to the HSTs. They saw that excellent care is being provided under difficult circumstances - including seriously ill patients, high census, constant pressures to admit and discharge quickly, very limited resources - and they said they do not often see such a high quality of care and staff dedication under those circumstances. It is very heartwarming to have outside experts make an unannounced visit and confirm what we who work here daily know and believe – which is that our patients come first and that we pull together through thick and thin to provide the best care that we can. You have my sincere thanks and gratitude for helping represent us so well during this survey. - Dr. Charles Li, Regional Hospital Administrator JOYCE FRASER AND LINDA assist clients with potting their new plants. God bless you all, I will miss you. Keep up the good work. -Shirley Laster Mary, Mary, quite contrary. How does your garden grow? With a little skill, a lot of love, and the help of the Garden Club of Georgia. Serendipity threw a garden party May 11 for GRH-S clients which included pot decorating, planting, and tips on gardening. Clients enjoyed decorating their own personal pot and choosing a plant from one of many to nurture and take care of. Tomato, pepper and mums were some of the seedlings that were offered. Supplies were purchased with the sponsorship of the Garden Club of Georgia, who encourages garden therapy programs at many of the regional hospitals in Georgia. After all the hard work and fun, clients enjoyed a big slice of ice cream cake while they sat back to admire everyone’s handiwork. Special thanks are extended to Mariah Hay and Joyce Fraser for organizing and orchestrating the event. Thanks are also extended to Activity Therapy and Client Education staff from Units Four and Five, who pitched in to help with the fun. Risk Management Week June 19-23 Risk Mgmt. WE ARE A FAMILY AND A TEAM!!” - Linda Harmon, RN Charge 4 June 15, 2005 NEWS KAREN DUNFORD Director of Monitoring and Evaluation retires after thirteen years of dedicated service. Ms. Dunford began as the Director of Nursing. As computer usage increased at the hospital, it was necessary to begin a data management program, and Ms. Dunford seized the opportunity and took the new position as Data Manager “It was technically a demotion but I knew I would have been jealous of anyone who would have taken that job. It was what I loved to do,” says Ms. Dunford. Through administrative changes, Ms. Dunford developed her program and took on more responsibility, becoming the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation. When asked what kept her here for 13 years Ms. Dunford replied, “It was the opportunity for flexibility and growth, building something out of nothing.” Ms. Dunford looks forward to her retirement so she can pursue her building and music hobbies, as well as learn Dutch, her husband’s native language. She also looks forward to spending more time with her family, especially her grandchildren, one of which lives here in Savannah. The Reporter PERSONAL HYGENE is important to help clients feel their best. Karen Dunford Retires Administration Can you guess who at the hospital has worked in Saudi Arabia for two years? If you guess Karen Dunford, Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, you’re right! Ms. Dunford’s stay in Saudi Arabia was a life event which brought her one step closer to working at Georgia Regional in a round-about sort of way, but her true career began as a nurse in direct care. She went on to receive her Masters of Nursing in Oncology from the University of Kansas where she met her future husband Jack Knops who was working on his PhD in Psychology. Ms. Dunford says it was her nursing experience which led her into pursuing a career in quality assurance, data management and monitoring and evaluation. Ms. Dunford says “It is typical for people in this field to have a clinical background.” Her stay in Saudi Arabia as a Quality Assurance Manager at a military hospital only re-enforced her preference for her change in profession. After finishing her two year contract she returned to the states. When Ms. Dunford and Dr. Knops married they decided to move to the east coast and chose Savannah. It worked out perfectly when they both took jobs here at GRH-S. Making Unit 6 More Beautiful Unit 6 It’s the feeling you get when you are wearing a new shirt or have just gotten a new haircut. It’s the feeling of presenting your best face to the world. This is the feeling that several HST’s on the Acute Care unit want to give their clients. That’s why Sarah Gorden, Leona Pinckney, Dee Nixon and Nancy Moltrey decided to start a personal care program. Every Wednesday clients will enjoy having their hair done, getting a manicure or learning some helpful make-up tips. Armed with a kit of donated products procured from Serendipity, clients will have access to a broad range of hair care equipment, hair products, hand care products, and a virtual palette of make up. “We are trying to help clients feel better about themselves,” says Sarah Gorden. “We are going to offer this every Wednesday.” For the clients on the Acute Care Unit, that is something special to look forward to every week. Blood Drive June 21 EMS Georgia Regional Hospital at Savannah will host a community blood drive for the American Red Cross on Wednesday, June 21 from Noon to 5PM. The drive will be held in the Gymnasium. This drive is open to anyone in the Savannah area who would like to participate, in addition to GRH-S employees. To give blood for transfusion to another person, you must be healthy, be at least 17 years old or 16 years old if allowed by state law, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days). “Healthy” means that you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, “healthy” also means that you are being treated and the condition is under control. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. During the first national celebration, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there. This event was inspired by local observances of the day that had taken place in several towns throughout America in the three years since the Civil War. By the late 1800s, many more cities and communities had begun to observe Memorial Day, and after World War I, it became an occasion for honoring those who had died in all America’s wars. The Reporter Unit 4 Grills Out Secure Unit Like many holidays, Unit 4 Activity Therapists Jimmie Bartley, Joyce Morris and staff work to help clients celebrate with something special to commemorate this Memorial Day. Clients enjoyed a cook-out complete with fried chicken, grilled sausage, baked beans and drink. They also learned about Memorial Day itself. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the DR. BETH DUBISAR with certificate for Outstanding Clinical Faculty in Psychiatry Plaque Created in Memory of Charles White Clinical Dr. Dubisar Recieves Recognition Clinical Mercer University School of Medicine Class of 2006 Savannah Campus held their Honors Reception Thursday, April 13, 2006. The Medical Class of 2006 voted and Dr. Beth Dubisar, PharmD, BCPP was presented a certificate for Outstanding Clinical Faculty in Psychiatry. Congratulations are extended to Dr. Dubisar for her recognition and achievement. Charles White was a caring and positive person, the kind of person you would like to see every day. Luckily, many of us did see Mr. White every day during the 15 years he worked here at GRH-S. Sadly, last fall Charles White lost his battle with cancer. He is survived by his immediate family, wife of 35 years, Martha Katherine Lee White; two sons and daughter-in-law, Howard and Karen White and Bryan. To remember Charles White and the amazing example he set as a husband, father, co-worker, and pastor a plaque was dedicated in his honor to be displayed in the Commerative Gallery in Building One last month. Martha White and son Bryan were present to attend the unveiling ceremony. MARTHA WHITE AND SON BRIAN accept a plaque in honor of the life husband and father Charles White. Powers Lori Riddle HEALTH CARE INFORMATION The State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) currently posts on the DCH website, information on Health Option Links and News for all of our health plan options. Simply go to the DCH website, www.dch.ga.gov and click on SHBP, then click on the Health Option Links and News. On this website you will find valuable information surrounding Care Coordination, NurseLine and Contact Information. **Care Coordination The purpose of the Care Coordination program is to provide employees with Care Coordination so you’ll have added information and support if you or a family member has a chronic condition. It is important that you have the tools and resources you need to take an active role in your health care. A nurse can help you take full advantage of the resources already available to you, tell you about additional services that may be helpful and send you educational information in the mail. This program is offered at no additional cost to you and your family. To get information about the enrollment process, call the Customer Service number on your Member ID card. **NurseLine Finding reliable health and wellbeing information over the Internet can be challenging. But with live nurse chat services, employees can have a one-to-one online discussion with a registered nurse and get the trusted information they want—all from Suggestions or Questions If you have any topic suggestions or questions, please submit them via e-mail or interoffice mail to Jamekia Powers in the Human Resource Department before the 20th of the month. We will discuss the topic or answer the question in the Human Resources Spotlight (no names will be used). your own computer. And, this service is available any time you need it—24 hours every day. The Benefits of Accumulating Sick and Annual Leave The Department of Human Resources and Georgia Regional Hospital expect you to report to work and to be on time as scheduled. Employees need to ensure an income in case of an illness, disability or for routine medical care. Allowing your sick leave to accumulate guarantees you will have income should you become sick or disabled. Sick leave can be considered “free” short term or long term disability insurance. Did you know that forfeited leave could be restored to you should you incur longterm disability? While using sick leave for an illness or disability, you do not have to worry about sending in direct payments to State Health or the Merit System, your benefits deductions continue (tax free) as if you were working. Accumulated annual leave is paid to employees when they leave state employment or retire, up to 360 hours. Forfeited sick and forfeited annual leave can be combined with your sick leave balance to extend your service if you are a member of the Employee’s Retirement System (ERS). This would allow you to retire sooner than expected! All employees are encouraged to maintain a minimum balance of 40 hours sick leave, and 40 hours annual leave. If you have further questions about sick or annual leave, please feel free to contact the Human Resource Management Department. The computers in the Human Resource Management Department will be available Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm. If you require computer access outside of these hours, please contact your supervisor. If you require assistance or need training, please contact Colleen Hartman or Lori Riddle at 912-356-2022 to schedule an appointment. HUMAN RESOURCES The Reporter GRH-S June 15, 2006 11 Retirement Information For service retirement, you should allow at least 45 days from the time the application is received by The Employee’s Retirement System (ERS). Applications must be received at least 30 days prior to retirement, but not more than 90 days prior to the retirement date in order to receive your first check on the last working day of your retirement month. If not, your check will be delayed. For information on retirement, please visit the ERS web site at: www.ersga.org. Retirees are eligible to continue their Health and Dental Benefits when they retire. If you have additional benefits such as Long-Term Care, Group Term Life Insurance (Employee, Spouse or Child), Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance or supplemental insurance (AFLAC, Chesapeake and Colonial), you must request Conversion and Portability information and forms so that you can individually continue your coverage. You can request forms from the insurance carrier or contact the Human Resource Management office (requests for forms or information on the conversion/portability of supplemental insurance should be directed to the insurance carrier only). Also for information concerning retirement and financial planning visit www.perpetualwealth.org. New Workers Compensation Reporting Procedures HR Lori Riddle Effective June 15, 2006, there will be changes in the procedure for reporting workers’ compensation injuries and illnesses. The Department of Administrative Services (DOAS) Risk Management Services Division has implemented a Statewide Workers’ Compensation Managed Care Organization (WC/MCO). The immediate benefits of the WC/MCO are case managers for every injury, medical treatment and return to work plans. Employees will no longer have the option of choosing a physician from a posted panel of physicians. However, the WC/MCO has a large network of licensed/ certified physicians, customized for DOAS. The new DOAS Managed Care Organization plan contractor is AmeriSys. AmeriSys will facilitate and provide care for all job-related injuries and illnesses. The new process will be as follows: If you are injured on the job, you must continue to report the injury to your supervisor immediately (no later than 24 hours). Instead of choosing a physician from a panel of physicians, your supervisor should report the injury to DOAS by calling 1-877-656-Risk (7475). Then, call Amerisys at 678781-2848 or 1-800-900-1582 to speak with a case manager who will assist you in obtaining medical care, selecting a physician, scheduling an appointment, and obtaining follow-up care. You will be asked to choose an authorized treating physician who will supervise your medical treatment to ensure you are receiving high quality, appropriate care. If, as a result of a work related injury or illness, you require immediate medical attention, you should proceed to the nearest emergency medical care facility. Following your emergency admission, service or procedure, you or your designated representative must notify Amerisys Managed Care of your injury. Pharmacy Benefits will be provided by Matrix Healthcare Services, 1-877-804-4900. Employees should identify themselves at the pharmacy by indicating: Premier Pharmacy Plan – Group #2105. NOTE: New Workers Compensation “Pink Posted Panels” will be posted on official bulletin boards as soon as possible. Also, each employee will receive a publication explaining in detail how to access the services of the WC/MCO, which includes a complete list of the medical providers. In addition, each employee will receive a wallet-sized card which contains information about the services of the WC/MCO including a 24-hour toll-free phone number for information on how to utilize these services. Employees should carry this card with them at all times. Any further details about these new changes in reporting workers’ compensation injuries/ illnesses will be forwarded as they are received. If you have any questions about these changes, please contact Lori Riddle in the Human Resources Department at ext. 2022.
