This title is extended to recognize the outstanding contributions of CU faculty members to their academic disciplines. Must demonstrate accomplishments
in accordance with the following University wide criteria, 1) Exemplary teaching; 2) distinguished scholarship or creative work. The title "Distinguished"
implies that there will be a limited number of faculty holding this title.
Professors should have the terminal degree appropriate to their field or its equivalent, plus outstanding accomplishment in both teaching and research.

Associate professors should have the terminal degree appropriate to their field or its equivalent, considerable successful teaching experience, and
promising accomplishment in research.
Assistant professors should have the terminal degree appropriate to their field or its equivalent, plus some successful teaching experience. They should
be otherwise well qualified to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and possess qualifications for research in a special field.

The rank of senior instructor gives higher recognition and salary and longer periods of appointment than that of instructor. It is awarded to faculty
members who do not have the prerequisites for promotion to the rank of assistant professor but who have special abilities, usually in teaching. Typically

hold the terminal degree and who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments and national recognition in clinical work, and an outstanding teaching
record. Faculty members at this rank are expected to devote a majority of effort to clinical care and teaching within the clinical setting. Continuing
productive scholarly activities as defined for Associate Professors below will be required.
This is "associate professor (specialty track/clinical)", is in the School of Medicine, and is parallel to the faculty rank of associate professor. Associate
professors in the specialty track/clinical must have the terminal degree. Faculty members at this rank are expected to devote a majority of effort to clinical
care and teaching and demonstrate excellence in both. They must present evidence of continuing scholarly activity, although this need not principally be
original research published in peer-reviewed journals nor represent the clinician-educator's major academic activity.


This is "assistant professor (specialty track/clinical)" in the School of Medicine and is parallel to the faculty rank of assistant professor. Assistant
professors in the specialty track/clinical must have the terminal degree plus evidence of successful teaching and clinical experience. They should
demonstrate potential for excellence in clinical activities and teaching within the clinical setting.
