									SAMPLE CONDOLENCE LETTER 1

                                                June 18, 2000

Mrs. Edna M. Johnson
61182 Oysterville Road
Mount Vernon, WA 92270

Dear Mrs. Johnson:

I was sorry to learn of your husband’s death, and I want to express my sympathy to
you and your family on behalf of the University of Washington. Your husband was a
wonderful friend of this institution, and we greatly benefited from his leadership of The
Boeing Company.

Mr. Johnson’s legacy at the University of Washington has many aspects, but one of
the most enduring is the Boeing Endowment for Excellence. I am informed that this
endowment began with a gift of $1 million in April 1988. Today, with endowment growth
and additional gifts from Boeing, that endowment has grown to almost $20 million. It is a
wonderful resource for the College of Engineering and for many other programs at the
University. Boeing’s initial gift was a farsighted investment in our faculty and students—an
exemplary act that inspired others to support the University of Washington. We are grateful
to you and your family for suggesting that gifts in memory of your husband benefit the
University.

Please accept my condolences at this difficult time. Your husband was a remarkable
man, and he made a difference in the lives of many people in this state and at this university.

                                                Sincerely yours,

                                                Mark A. Emmert
                                                President
