Action Steps

Emotional Intelligence is a critical skill for successful leadership. Work through the
questions below to find ways that you can sharpen those skills.

1. Write a positive script. We often let negative messages drift through our minds and
take over. These are like scripts that replay themselves automatically. (For example,
"I'm not a good sales manager. I will never be able to inspire these people or reach the
monthly sales goals.")

Take a moment to choose a situation like this in your professional life that is holding
back you or (your team). Now write down a new script below.

2. Reconsider. We tend to make assumptions about others' emotions or intentions.
However, if you challenge those thoughts, or consider that there is another explanation,
you can bypass the wasted emotions and use your emotional intelligence to reframe the
situation. Can you think of a situation that you tend to consider negative, hurtful or as a
failure? Write notes about the situation here.

3. Reframe. Can you think of a way to reframe the situation? For example, the loss of a
job, promotion or account may bring about negative feelings, but can be reframed by
asking yourself what you have learned from the job, what you will be able to accomplish
now that you are not servicing that particular account, and so on. What are some new
statements you can make to yourself about the situation you described above?
