Instructor Led Technical Courses
CTI’s approach to training is different from other programs in that it offers training via a season ticket which
allows a shop to send up to 6 technicians for one package price. CTI takes a structured approach to
technician training with each season or year building upon the last. Each course is constantly updated to
keep the content fresh and relevant. What separates CTI from other training programs is that it is not the
usual shotgun approach that technicians have been offered in the past. By building a solid foundation and
then building upon that, CTI finds a dramatic increase in retention from class to class and year to year.

CTI classes incorporate the latest presentation technology to help meet the ‘hands-on’ needs of today’s
technicians. CTI’s Virtual Hands-on Training methods allow ALL technicians in the class to see and
analyze scan data, waveforms and other test information in a way that replicates the actual test tool being
used. This eliminates the group from having to crowd around the instructor to see the live information. CTI
Virtual Hands-on Training also ensures that the vehicle needed to make a point or to demonstrate a
technique is available in every class.

Classes are held every other month within the training year. Depending on your location there are 5 two-
night technical courses and either 1 one-night technician productivity course or 1 two-night business
management course.

CTI also offers stand alone courses that can be delivered in areas where a CTI region can not be formed or
in CTI regions where additional training or seasonal topics are needed. These courses are typically two-
night events.

All CTI courses are led by Certified CTI Instructors. Each local instructor is assigned to a region and will
lead that group of technicians through the season lineup. The relationship created with the instructor and the
other members of a CTI region are one of the greatest benefits of joining CTI. Refer to the information about
our instructors starting on page 5 of this catalog

Why Should I Train My Employees?

     • Are you beginning to question the way you diagnose today’s vehicles?
     • Can you afford to not train your employees?
     • What are the costs to hire a new employee – if the person you need is even out
         there?
     • What is it worth to have knowledgeable people making solid business and
diagnostic decisions… people willing to learn and apply their new knowledge,
people who want to work for you because you see value in them, because you
want to give them a chance?
     • Do you continue to use the same techniques and diagnostics and expect your
         productivity to improve?

Why Should I Choose CTI for My Automotive Training Needs?

     • Since our first class was developed in 1999, CTI has delivered over 2 million
student hours of training to nearly 40,000 technicians.

course gives the student practical application based techniques that when used
back at the shop will ensure increased productivity and profitability.
     • CTI regions are formed locally and consist of a group of 14+ shops who have the
ability to send all their technicians to 44 hours of technical training over the
course of one year for one low price. 5 two-night technical courses are held every
other month followed by a one-night technician productivity skills class.

                    Course Purpose
Exhaust gas analysis is a technique that is usually perceived to be necessary only in emission test
areas of the country. When it comes to repairing import or domestic OBD-II vehicles, the gas
analyzer can be a technicians’ best friend. This course exposes the student to the use of the
Lambda calculation found on most new analyzers. Students will also be taught how to calculate
Lambda using iATN. Lambda can simply give a technician diagnostic direction in a matter of
                          seconds.

                    Course Purpose
Modern ignition systems are becoming increasingly difficult to diagnose. This course provides an in-

AD-511 Developing Diagnostic Strategies for Intermittent
Drivability 8-hours (CEU 0.8)

Course Purpose
This class discusses the complexities of intermittent drivability problems. There is no other problem
that comes close to consuming a technician’s time and stops him from being productive. This class
uses case studies of real vehicles with intermittent problems and how they were diagnosed. The
class begins with a discussion of how to approach any intermittent complaint and helps you develop
a procedure that you can use in your shop every day. The root cause of a problem may be found in
the ignition, fuel, or computer systems. The procedures will require the use of digital multi-meters,
digital storage scopes, engine analyzers and graphing software.

                    Course Purpose
This class will cover EVAP monitor failures on OBD-II vehicles. EVAP monitors are abstract and
don’t always have component failures. Learn to deal with OBD-II software issues. Real OBD-II
vehicles with monitors that have failed will be used as examples to discus the procedures required
to diagnose them. Each vehicle with a monitor failure begins with a short monitor review followed by
coverage of the procedures used to solve them.

                    Course Purpose
Controller Area Network (CAN) is the new standard communication protocol between the scan tool and
the vehicle that will be fully implemented by 2008. Starting in 2005 this new robust system will be
phased in to approximately 25% of the fleet each year. CAN has been around for many years on Euro
and some other domestic vehicles and will provide many new enhancements to your diagnostic
capabilities. This course will cover the basics of CAN, how to recognize a CAN system and will focus
on the changes that will affect your diagnostic strategies.

                    Benefits of Attending

BMC-501 Preventive Maintenance for your Business
8-hours 14 AMI Credits

Course Purpose

Repair shop owners are constantly working to educate their customers on the importance of regular vehicle
maintenance. It is common knowledge that a properly maintained vehicle is much more cost effective and
reliable than one that is only serviced when it breaks down. Those same principles can be applied to the
smooth and efficient operation of your business. A business that only receives attention when it breaks down
will not be as successful and profitable for its owners as one that receives attention on a regular basis to
ensure that it is achieving optimum results. This workshop will provide you with the skills and procedures you
need to perform on your business to maximize your opportunities from your hard work and significant
investment.

In this module you will learn to develop an Operating Business Plan specifically designed to meet personal
goals and business needs for your own situation. You will be provided with systems and tracking guidelines to
ensure that you are achieving your Business Plan goals on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
