NATURE OF WORK AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Sheriff’s Deputy: An employee in this position is under general supervision, enforces laws, investigates crimes, provides security for correctional facilities, patrols assigned areas, serves individuals with summons, subpoenas, attachments and legal notices issued by courts, etc.; may serve in all areas under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff (e.g., Patrol, Investigations, Corrections, Court Services, etc.) as the operational needs of the Office dictate. Minimum Qualifications: Completion of secondary education or GED equivalent, supplemented by completion of the Ohio Basic Peace Officer Training Program*, per Section 109.77(A) of the Ohio Revised Code. Must possess a current valid State of Ohio vehicle operator’s license* and pass Department required physical, psychological, polygraph examinations and substance screening. A candidate’s completion of Correctional Training Programs, as prescribed by the State of Ohio and Federal guidelines, gives that candidate preference for Summit County Sheriff’s Office hiring purposes. * NOTE: Proof of current OPOTA Certification and valid driver’s license must accompany the application. The County of Summit is an Equal Opportunity Employer and Provider of ADA Service SCOPE AND PLACE OF EXAMINATION Scope of Examination: This examination will consist of a written test and physical agility performance test. The written portion will cover the following areas: Knowledge of safety practices and procedures, public relations, report writing, record keeping, and simple math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division); Skill in observation; Ability to read and comprehend technical/legal materials, to detect unusual or dangerous conditions and take appropriate action; Understanding of human behavior. There will also be a section covering training, education and experience. All applicants must pass the written section and the physical agility test to receive a final passing score. Place of Examination: This examination will be given in Summit County, Ohio, only. Applicants who have been approved to take the examination will be notified by mail of the exact time and place to report for the examination. HOW TO APPLY Only Sheriff’s Office application form DEP-06 completed in all possible detail and submitted (or U.S. postmarked) by the filing deadline will be accepted. The completed application will be the sole criterion used to determine eligibility for this test. Applicants must address each of the minimum qualifications, directly showing how each is met. Avoid assumptions and jargon. Information showing that you meet all of the minimum qualifications, as stated on this announcement, must appear on the application to assure its approval. Resumes and transcripts may accompany the application as supplemental information only, but will not be reviewed to determine if you meet minimum qualifications. No additional information will be accepted after the filing deadline. A non-refundable filing fee of TWENTY AND NO/100 DOLLARS ($20.00) must accompany the application. Only a certified check, made payable to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, will be accepted. GENERAL INFORMATION Eligible List: When an applicant receives a passing score, her/his name is placed on the eligible list. The eligible list is arranged according to examination scores from highest to lowest. The eligible list will be used to fill current promotional vacancies as they occur. When an appointing authority has a vacancy to fill, ten (10) candidates are chosen from the eligible list in order of score and notified to report for an interview. The names of those not chosen within a year are removed from the eligible list. To become eligible after this period of time, a candidate must retake and pass the examination.
