To celebrate Education Month, the Ministry of Education is putting together an innovative Celebration of Learning On-line Calendar. The On-line Calendar will be accessible from the Ministry of Education’s web page shortly before and during Education Month, March 2008. The Celebration of Learning On-line Calendar will highlight education-related events taking place around the Province during Education Month. The On-line Calendar will feature student art (see below) and will illustrate the array of education- and learning-related activities that take place in British Columbia. EVENTS The 2008 Southern Vancouver Island Parent Conference, Generating Action from Dialogue, will take place Saturday, February 23rd from 8:15 am - 4:15 pm. The conference, at Spencer Middle School, will feature a panel discussion on Fair Schools; workshops on Safe and Healthy Schools; and speaker, Gary Anaka, on Growing the Brain: Helping Children to Learn. Puente Theatre and the Inter-Cultural Association are presenting Long Ago and Far Away and the Winter Tales Multicultural Storytelling Series for all ages and groups. FOR STUDENTS Way to Go! Poster Art Contest - an excellent way to get students to think, discuss and take action to help reduce emissions that contribute to climate change. Elementary and Middle School students are encouraged to draw colourful artwork and write engaging phrases about the benefits of safely walking, bicycling, taking the bus and other forms of active transportation as this relates to nature, personal health and happiness. Prize: a classroom set of Steps Count pedometers and related resources worth $700. Art work packages sent from schools must be postmarked on or before March 14, 2008. Alcohol-Drug Education Service is pleased to announce Active & Tobacco Free poster contest available to BC students in grades 4-5, 6-8, and 9-10. Decide what the active and tobacco free message means to you.Be creative in sharing your thoughts with others; create a drawing that illustrates the importance of leading an active and tobacco free lifestyle. Contest Deadline February 22, 2008 Art submissions are now being accepted from students in grades K-12 for the Celebration of Learning On-line Calendar. The deadline for submitting art to the e-Gallery is noon on February 15, 2008. For details on how to submit your art, students should talk to their regular teacher, art teacher or principal. Submissions will be made as high-quality digital photographs of original pieces of work and require a signed parent/lawful guardian consent form. Reel Vue is open for submissions from Grades 10–12 students. To be considered for selection, students are invited to submit an original artistic work in one of three media (visual arts, writing, and music). Submissions must be thematically linked to one of five themes relating to BC history (home, time, space, humanity, and choice). The submission deadline is February 22, 2008. VCPAC has a mailing list service, free of charge, available to all PACs. If your PAC would like to have a subscription-based email list, which parents can automatically opt in and out of, contact info@vcpac.ca CONTACT AND SUBMISSION INFORMATION Article ideas and submissions can be sent via e-mail to info@vcpac.ca. Submissions should be sent to us no later than Friday, 9 PM prior to the day of distribution. Communications retains the right to edit all submissions for clarity.
